Study on Pest Status and Management of Mite and Thrips on Gerbera

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study on pest status and management of mite and thrips in gerbera was conducted at the experimental farm of Floriculture division, Horticulture research centre, BARI, Gazipur during Rabi season of 2009-2010. Six treatments including an untreated control viz., spray Kumulus DF @1.5ml/L of water for mite + spray with Ascend 50SC @ 0.5ml/L of water for thrips at 15 days interval, white sticky trap, yellow sticky trap, spray with fresh water only and spray Omite @ 2ml/L of water at 15 days interval were assessed. The result indicated that spraying Omite @ 2ml/L of water at 15 days interval reduced maximum (47.62 and 58.04%) infestation both of thrips and mite with highest flower yield (78 sticks per plot) of Gerbera followed by Kumulux DF+Ascend 50SC at 15 days interval (32.17 and 57.60%) and 70.33 sticks per plot .

Objectives:

To know the pest status and develop an effective control measure for mite and thrips in gerbera.

Methodology:

An experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Floriculture Division, HRC, BARI, Gazipur during November 2009 to May 2010. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with four replications. There were six treatments used in the experiment: i) Spray with Kumulus DF @1.5ml/L of water for mite + spray with Ascend 50 SC @ 0.5ml/L of water for thrips at 15 days interval. ii) Use of sticky white trap. iii) Use of sticky yellow trap. iv) Spray with fresh water at 15 days interval. v) Spray with omite @ 2ml.L of water at 15 days interval. vi) Untreated control. Unit plot size was 3m x 2m and plant to plant distance was 50cm. Seedlings were transplanted in December 2009. Standard cultural management was followed to raise a good crop. Data were recorded on number of healthy and infested plants and flowers. The experimental plots were sprayed from first appearance of mite and thrips infestation.
