For domestication and induced breeding of Rita rita, five experiments were conducted. The 1st experiment was conducted to domesticate the Rita rita in controlled environments, outdoor pond and raceway. In both environments the fish were domesticated successfully with the survival rates of 90% in raceway and 80% in outdoor pond using the same local prawn feed. The values of physico-chemical parameters were within optimum level during the study period in both the environments. The 2nd one was initiated to establish a suitable feed which is available and cheap. Among three feeds (local prawn, chicken viscera and formulated feed) better growth performance was observed (in weight) in case of chicken viscera (1615.03%) followed by local prawn (1600.12%) and lowest was in case of formulated feed (617.33%). The survival rates were 100%, 100% and 88.8% in treatments I, II and III respectively. The specific growth rate values were 1.09, 1.10 and 0.42 and FCR values were 0.40, 0.40 and 0.15 for the treatments I, II and III respectively. The significantly (P<0.05) higher growth (in terms of length & weight) were observed in treatments I and II when compared with treatment III but there was no significant (P>0.05) difference between the treatment I and II. The 3rd experiment was conducted to study the morphological features including total length body-weight, relationships between total length and other morphometric and meristic characters of 158 specimens. Significant curvilinear relationship existed between total length and other morphometric characters and between head length and other characters of the head. Relationships between total length and various body measurements of the fish were highly significamt (P <0.01) except the relationship between total length and pelvic fin length of male fish (P<0.05). In case of meristic characters- dorsal fin rays, pelvic fin rays, pectoral fin rays, anal fin rays, caudal fin rays, number of vertebrae and branchiostegal rays were found to be more or less similar except slight differences. The values of condition factors (k) in the total length body-weight relationships for female and male were found to be 0.41 and 0.38 respectively. The mean values of relative condition factors (kn) were 1.0 and 1.005 for female and male respectively. The 4th experiment was on histological studies to determine the breeding season. Gonado-somatic index and fecundity were determined. The highest GSI were observed 0.51±0.15 and 0.6±0.15 in the month of July in case of female and male respectively. The fecundity was between 9721±175 to 69950±220. Six developmental stages of oocytes: chromatin nucleolar stage, early and late perinucleolar stage, yolk vesicle stage and early and late yolk granule stage were observed in female Rita rita during the one year study period. In case of male Rita rita, four developmental stages of oocytes- spermatogonia, spermatocytes, spermatids and spermatozoa were observed during the five months study period from April to August. The 5th experiment was initiated to establish an induced breeding technique. In order to standardize the pituitary glands dose for precipitation of ovulation in female Rita rita four different doses viz 80, 100, 120 and 140 mg PG kg-1 bodyweight of the fish were used and best result was obtained from 100 mg PG kg-1 body-weight in respect of ovulation rate of females, fertilization and hatching rates of eggs. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference among the females treated once (with the whole dose) or twice divided dose of pituitary glands at the rate of 40% and 60% at 6h intervals in respect of ovulation rate of females and fertilization and hatching rates of eggs. Successive embryonic and larval development stages were also observed.

Rita rita may be cultured in controlled environment using a suitable feed.. June and July is the peak breeding season of Rita rita. A dose of 100 mg PG/ Kg body weight has been found to be optimum for induced breeding of Rita rita. This induced breeding can be used for large scale propagation of this species thus saving it from extinction
