An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during August 2007 to January 2008 to study the effect of variety and harvesting time on yield and quality of transplanted jute seed. The experiment included four jute varieties viz. O-72, O-9897, C-83 and CVL-1 and five harvesting time viz. 75, 80, 85, 90 and 95 days after flowering (DAF). The trial was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The variety O-72 gave the highest seed yield of 54.15 g/m2 and variety O-9897 gave the lowest yield of 37.91 g/m2. On an average, harvesting of the crop at 90 DAF gave the highest seed yield among the five harvesting dates. The result showed that the highest seed yield of transplanted jute was obtained with variety O-72 for harvesting at 85 DAF. The highest germination and vigour index was also obtained when the crop variety O-72 was harvested at 85 DAF. The study concludes that higher yield of the jute seed with good quality for transplanted crop could be obtained for harvesting at 90–95 DAF.

To study the effect of variety and harvesting time on yield and quality of transplanted jute seed.

An experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during 18 August 2007 to 20 January 2008 with a view to studying the effect of harvesting time and variety on yield and quality of seed of transplanted jute seed. The experimental field is located at 240 25/ N latitude and 900 50/ E longitude at an elevation of 18 m above the sea level belonging to the Old Brahmaputra Flood Plain Agro-Ecological Zone (UNDP and FAO, 1988). The soil was sandy loam in texture with pH value 6.9 and very low organic matter (0.463%). The experiment included four jute varieties viz. C-83, CVL-1, O-72 and O-9897 and five harvesting dates viz. 75, 80, 85, 90 and 95 days after flowering of jute. The trial used a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Among the four varieties, there were two Deshi (C. capsularis) varieties (C-83 and CVL-1) and two Tossa (C. olitorius) varieties (O-72 and O-9897). The unit plot size was 3.0 m × 2.0 m. The seeds of jute varieties were collected from Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Dhaka. Nursery beds were prepared in the Agronomy Field Laboratory by spading to make the soil well pulverized. Weeds and stubbles were removed and dry seeds were sown in the well pulverized nursery bed on 21 July 2007. Thirty days old seedlings were transplanted on puddled land on 19 August 2007 allocating one seedling per hill at 30 cm × 10 cm spacing. The recommended doses of fertilizers were 250, 100 and 20 kg/ha of urea, TSP and MP, respectively. The whole amount of TSP and MP were applied as basal dose at the time of final land preparation. The urea was top dressed in three equal splits on 15, 30 and 45 days after transplanting (DAT). Gap filling and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Flowering time was recorded at 50% of the flower were bloom. Flowering was observed for Deshi jute verities at 35 days after transplanting (DAT) and 55 DAT for Tossa jute varieties. Harvesting was done from central 1.8m × 1.0m area of each plot as per experimental specification. At the time of harvesting five sample plants were collected from each plot at random. Harvested plants of each plot were separately bundled, tagged and then sun dried for 4-6 days and threshed by a wooden mallet. Seeds were sun dried, cleaned and weighed. The data collected on different parameters were statistically analyzed using ANOVA technique the MSTAT-C computer package program. The mean differences among the treatments were compared by Duncans’s Multiple Rang Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).
