Crop Residue and Weed Management of Permanent Raised Beds in Rice-wheat Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In Wheat-Mungbean-DS Aman pattern higher grain yields of wheat was produced by permanent beds with 100% crop residue retention. Moreover, average wheat grain yield was better in different bed practices than conventional. Mungbean was damaged due to excessive rainfall. Average grain yields of DS Aman was obtained better from different permanent beds than conventional.

Objectives:

To compare the agro-economic productivity and resource use efficiency of permanent bed system and conventional method.
To compare the effect of crop residue retention on the productivity of permanent beds
To compare the effect of herbicide on weed control in permanent bed

Methodology:

The experiment is a long-term experiment and commenced in Rabi season 2006-07 with wheat at BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur. Five crop establishment options viz., T₁-permanent beds with 100% crop residue retention; T₂-permanent bed with 50% crop residue retention; T3- permanent bed without crop residue retention; T₄-semi permanent bed (new beds with conventional tillage in every wheat season) and T₅-conventional (flat), and two weed control methods viz, (W₁) hand weeding and (W₂) herbicide + hand weeding were evaluated in RCB design with three replications in Wheat-Mungbean-DS Aman rice cropping pattern. For the treatments with bed, 70 cm (40 cm top and 30 cm furrow) wide beds with 15 cm height were made. For the treatments with herbicide, non-selective herbicide Roundup was used in transition period between mungbean and rice and the transition period between wheat and mungbean. In Rabi season, wheat was sown on 22 Nov 2010 and harvested on 20 March 2011. Again mungbean was sown on 01 April 2011 after wheat harvest. Mungbean was damaged due to heavy rainfall and after mungbean DS rice (BRRI dhan33) was sown on 25 July 2011. DS (BRRI dhan33) rice was harvested on 14 Nov 2011 and was followed by Wheat. Recommended management practices were followed for wheat, mungbean and rice cultivation.

Achievement/Findings:

In Wheat-Mungbean-DS Aman pattern higher grain yields of wheat was (3.00 t/ha) produced by permanent beds with 100% crop residue retention. Moreover, average wheat grain yield was better in different bed practices than conventional. Mungbean was damaged due to excessive rainfall. Average grain yields of DS Aman was (3.46 t/ha) obtained better from different permanent beds than conventional (3.35 t/ha).
