In-vitro Screening of New Bacteriocides Against Bacterial Blight Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Among the tested chemicals streptomycin inhibited the maximum growth of BB pathogen followed by Krosin AG 10SP and Sunbenchlop 37 WP. Krosin AG 10SP and Sunbenchlop 37 WP were formulated by streptomycin. The control disc (DW) did not show any inhibitory activity against BB pathogen. This study suggested, there is a possibility of streptomycin to control BB pathogen in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To find out the effective chemicals against bacterial blight pathogen in Bangladesh

Methodology:

Nine new chemicals including streptomycin were tested following disc diffusion method. Young culture of the test bacteria BXO9 seeded over the PSA plate with a sterile swab. Sterile filter paper discs of 6 mm diameter were socked with bacteriocide and air dry to evaporate the solvent and the discs were applied over the seeded plates at equidistance. The plates were incubated at 37^oC for 48-72 h. After the incubation period, the plates were observed for a clearance zone around the discs which indicated a positive antibacterial activity of the respective chemicals. The clearance zones formed around each disc were measured. Each experiment was replicated five times. The mean ± SE of the inhibition zone were taken for evaluating the antibacterial activity of the chemicals compared with distilled water.
