Among 9 fungicides two fungicides namely Sandazim and Opal were found highly effective (>80% reduction) in controlling Sheath blight disease in both the location. Sicotaf were not effective against sheath blight disease. Chokka, Rinzer and Defender can reduce disease effectively (>80% reduction) only at Gazipur site, on the other hand Maczim were found effective at BRRI Rajshahi. Fungicide Trihex reduced the disease 81% over control in one trial (Rajshahi) but 43.08% in another trial (Gazipur) indicates inconsistent results and need further study.

To find out suitable fungicide(s) for the management of sheath blight

Nine fungicides were tested against sheath blight disease using BR11 as test materials in T. Aman, 2010 at BRRI Gazipur and Rajshahi station. Artificial inoculation was done at the maximum tillering stage by inserting growing mycelial PDA plug of Rhizoctonia solani inside the hill (just above water line). Two consecutive sprays at 5 and 15 days after inoculation were done when clear sheath blight symptoms appeared. Fertilizer and other agronomic management were practiced as per BRRI recommendation.
