Evaluation of Fungicides as Seedling Treatment for Controlling Bakanae Disease

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in farmers’ field. Rice variety BR1 was evaluated against various fungicides at seedling stage. Twenty five days old, naturally infected seedlings of this variety, grown in nursery bed were uprooted and deeping their root system and stem base in different fungicidal suspension for 6-8 hours. Seedlings deeping in fresh water served as control. Freshly treated seedlings for each treatment were transplanted in the puddle field following RCB design. Percent hill infection, tiller number, panicle/m² and yield data were recorded. The result showed that all the fungicides viz Bavistin 50WP, Sunphanate and Nativo significantly reduced the % hill infection and which were 0.92, 4.53 and 5.36%, respectively comparing with control (12.86). The lowest(0.92%) hill infection was recorded in bavistin 50 WP treated seedlings which is statistically similar with Nativo treated seedlings (5.36%). The yield in each treatment increased significantly over control. Among the fungicides higher (5.30 t/ha) yield was observed when the seedlings were treated with Bavistin and 4.75 t/ha with Nativo treated seedlings. Which was statistically significant, but statistically similar results was found with Bavistin and Sunphanate treated seedlings. The lowest 4.00 t/ha yield was found in control plot. Therefore, all the fungicides gave higher yield comparing with control. Although, Bavistin 50WP was found more effective as seedling treatment.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable chemical as seedlings treatment for bakanae disease control.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in farmers’ field during Aus 2010 and 2011 at Habiganj district. Rice variety BR1 (highly susceptible to bakanae) was evaluated against various fungicides as seedling treatments. Twenty five days old, naturally infected seedlings of this variety, grown in 5x1 m nursery bed were uprooted and deeping their root system and stem base in different fungicidal suspension treatments viz. Bavistin 50WP, Sunphanate 70WP, Carzeb 75WP and Nativo 75WP for 6-8 hours. Seedlings deeping in fresh water served as control. Freshly treated seedlings for each treatment were transplanted in the puddle field in a RCBD. The unit plot size and the spacing were 3 x 4 m and 20 x 15 cm respectively. Percent hill infection, tiller number, panicle/m² and yield data were recorded.
