Efficacy of Neem Seed Kernel Extract Against Ufra Disease of Rice (2010-2011)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Incidence of damaged tiller was 4.71 and 5.01% with 5% and 10% solution of neem extract respectively whereas; it was 12.60% with 15% solution of neem extract. Ufra-1 Incidence ranged from 4.27 to 33.51% in neem extract treated plots compared to 0 and 43.89 % in healthy and diseased control respectively. Again, the incidence of ufra-2 was 12.95 % with 15% neem seed kernel extract where it was 27.19% in diseased control. The incidence of Ufra-3 varied from 3.51 to 7.11% in neem extract treated plots compared to 13.46% in diseased control. Total ufra incidence ranged from 27.10 to 57.21% in all the neem extract treated plots where it was 84.54% in diseased control. Furadan 5G treated pots produced 77.93% healthy panicles with yield of 4.10 gm/panicle and in contrast, 0% healthy panicle producing a very low yield of 0.29 gm/panicle were recorded in the diseased control pots. In neem extract treated pots healthy panicles varied from 38.08 to 65.11% with yield of 2.02 to 3.95 gm/panicle where the yield of 3.95 gm/panicle was recorded with 10% concentration of neem seed kernel extract which was statistically similar to the yield recorded with and Furadan 5G. From the above discussion it can be summarized that application of neem seed kernel extract at 10% and 15% concentration were found to be effective against ufra disease. Among these two concentrations of neem seed kernel extract, application at 10% resulted lower percentage of damaged tillers due to absence of phytotoxicity (found in 15% concentration) which ultimately increased the percentage of healthy tiller and yield of rice.

Objectives:

To test the efficacy of neem seed kernel extract against ufra disease of rice.

Methodology:

The pot experiment was conducted in the net house of Plant Pathology Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) during T.aman, 2009 following Completely Randomized Design with three (3) replications. Three concentrations of neem seed kernel extract (5, 10 and 15%) mixed with emulsifier (detergent at 1%) were tested against ufra disease. Previously inoculated seedlings of BR3 were transplanted (5 seedlings per pot) in earthen pots (25 cm diameter). Neem seed kernel extract was applied twice, first at 20 DAT and the second at 15 days interval. A standard check (Furadan 5G at 1 kg a.i. /ha) and two control treatments (healthy and diseased) were also maintained.
