The research project aimed to conserve and improve the Red Chittagong Cattle through enhancing the livelihood of community farmer. From the inception of the project up to date the details information regarding progeny, productive and reproductive performance and farmers benefits from milk and animal sale are being recorded with close monitoring. The mean birth weight, 205 day weaning weight, weaning age of male, female and pooled values were 14.21±0.27 (34), 14.79±0.37 (35) and 14.50±0.23 (69) kg, 41.54±2.05 (20), 47.85±3.03 (20) and 44.69±1.87 (40) kg, 191.68±3.26 (20), 185.60±3.30 (20) and 188.56±2.34 (40) days, respectively. The mean lactation length, lactation milk yield, daily milk yield and dry period were 228.13±6.61 (52), 466.66±27.38 (41) kg, 1.98±0.08 (43) kg and 260.97±24.77 (32) days, respectively. The mean postpartum estrous period, service period, conception rate and calving interval were 160.05±15.89 (37) days, 215.52±17.33 (42) days 73.30±3.15 (80) % and 509.89±15.37 (65) days, respectively. The average herd mortality was 9% from which calf mortality was 16.5%. The monetary benefits were realized by RCC farmers through milk sale, growing bull sale, culled cow sale etc. The findings of the study indicated that farmers were making money out of RCC farming for livelihood and conservation of valuable RCC genetic resource were ensured. Further, biological data  generated on animals of new generations and parities / stages created research opportunity for the graduates and would be useful to standardize performance and animal recording system in rural household level.

The research project is aimed to conserve and improve the Red Chittagong Cattle through enhancing the livelihood of community farmer

The said project was started its journey with the collaboration of World Vision Bangladesh from 1st January, 2009. Various activities were  carried out to achieve the goals viz. (i) to find out the performance of RCC in the rural farmers’ house out of its place of origin, (ii) livelihood enhancement through rearing RCC, (iii) production and monitoring of progressive generations of RCC and (iv) production of proven RCC bull semen at BAU AI Centre to breed RCC seed cows by employed field inseminator in the RCC community. In that phase a total of 67 poor farmers were selected from Char Jailkhana, Sadar Upazila, Mymensingh near the bank of Brahmaputra River and RCCs of BAU Nucleus Herd were disseminated among them. The activities being carried out at the community are: i) training and motivation of farmers, ii) continuation of animal record keeping by employed field record keeper and analysis of recorded data, iii) regular vaccination, deworming & health campaign by technical personnel, iv) dissemination of seed and cuttings of HYV fodder among the farmers, v) production of proven RCC bull semen at BAU AI Centre to breed RCC seed cows by employed field inseminator in the RCC community vi) introduction of screened seed bull calves from their home tract for genetic diversification, and vi) providing technical support to the community farmers by regular field visit.

Title of new technology: “Conservation and development of RCC germplasm through community participation” a)Key Characteristics: Primarily a total of 67 poor farmers were selected from Char Jailkhana, Sadar Upazila, Mymensingh near the bank of Brahmaputra River and RCCs of BAU Nucleus Herd were disseminated among them. According to deed of agreement farmers have no right to sell any animals except in some cases (like aged, deformed or poor performer animals and male calves) prior to the permission of the authority. The farmers have right to sell milk from their cows and earn money. But in case of animals sold they have right to get 50% selling money. Farmers are obeyed to take and provide milk and other necessary records which are necessary for analytical purposes. In this way the RCC population are being progressed and conserved through community farmers’ participation. b)Impact of environment: This is completely environment friendly program, because the main products are milk and meat which are directly consumed by human and residual products like manure is used as inorganic fertilizer and hides are used for footwear. c)Risk involvement in adopting the technology: There are no risks in adopting of this technology. d)Socio-economic aspects: Farmers are being immensely benefited by selling milk and animals produced in the community. e)Procedure of transfer: After five year on-station research work at BAU, the animals of the BAU Nucleus Herd were disseminated among the selected community farmers free of cost with deed of agreement following some rules and regulations. The new progeny are transferred to new farmers of the community to expand the program as well as to ensure conservation and improvement of the RCC population. f) There are some distinct outcomes from the project, (i) livelihood enhancement of the rural poor farmers by getting live animals free of cost and another is conservation of valuable RCC genetic resource through this on-going farmer participatory program, (ii) huge biological data on animals of new generations and parities and stage are being accumulated by the close supervision of the project technical personnel which will be useful to standardize performance and performance recording system in farmers’ house, (iii) creating learning opportunity for the Animal Husbandry graduates, and (iii) farmers and breeding service providers such as BRAC are procuring pure RCC females and males as seed animals.
