Cultural Management of the Diseases of Capsicum Annuum

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A pot experiment was conducted to find the best growth conditions for production of healthy capsicum fruit at the Bangladesh Agricultural University, campus. Seeds were treated prior to sowing with skimmed milk suspension 1:4 dilution and 1:2 dilution of garlic extract. The seedlings were raised singly in the pots and were placed in any of these places: (1) Seed Pathology Centre (SPC) building open roof, (2) in a green house lacking air cooling (3) net house and (4) open space completely randomized design. Net house was the best in preventing disease intensity and severity and gave better yield of healthy capsicum fruit whereas, the green house having no temperature control performed worst in all the parameters considered.

Objectives:

To find the best growth conditions for production of healthy capsicum fruit

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Seed Pathology Centre (SPC) of the Department of Plant Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during December, 2006 to July, 2007. The capsicum cultivar, Paprika was used in this study. A total of 150 healthy looking seeds were employed in the experiment, 50 seeds were treated with 1:4 dilution skimmed milk, 50 seeds were treated with 1:2 dilution garlic extract and the remaining 50 seeds were used untreated as control. Seed was washed in distilled water for 30 minutes then dried and sown in earthen pots filled adequately with sterilized soil and allowed to germinate and grow for 21 days in an insect proof net house. Abnormal and symptom bearing seedlings were carefully removed and destroyed as soon as these were located. Data on discarded seedlings were kept. The seedlings were under close observation until transplanted to experimental pots. The experiment was set up in a completely randomized design (CRD) with three replications. From the seedlings grown in the nursery pots four healthy looking best seedlings were transplanted. The transplanted pots were placed in the four locations: P₁ = Roof top, P₂ = Green house, P₃ = Open ground and P₄ =Net house. All other cultural supports for plant growth were provided equally to every pot.The crop was grown with proper care and management. Fruit which showed appearance of red colour were harvested by hand picking. Data on 1) Plant height (cm); 2) Number of leaves per plant; 3) Number of branches per plant; 4) Number of fruit set per plant; 5) Number of mature fruit (for harvested) per plant; 6) Number of healthy plants/treatment; 7) Number of diseased plant/treatment/disease (mosaic/leaf spot/leaf blight/others); 8) Number of symptom bearing leaves per plant; 9) Diseased leaf area and 10) Yield parameter yield/plant (g). Data were recorded at 75 days after transplanting compiled and tabulated in proper form and subjected to statistical analysis. Analysis of variance was done following Completely Randomized Design (CRD) and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

There was no significant variation on weight of fruit among the different places. Potted plants placed in the net house gave higher fruit 26.43 g yield/plant followed by the greenhouse (13.37g). However, numerically the garlic treated plants gave higher fruit yield (19.54 g) followed by skimmed milk (16.38 g).The effect of different places in combination with different treatments on fruit yield/plant was statistically non significant. However, numerically, the treatment combination P₂T₂ showed the highest fruit yield/plant 33.10 g whereas in P₁T₀ the yield was the lowest 7.07 g/plant.
