Assessment of Fiber Quality in Relation to Spinning, Tenacity, Breaking Extension and Work of Rupture.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius), white jute(Corchorus Capsularies), classified into six grades, namely BWspl, BWA, BWB, BWC, BWD, BWE, studied in the investigation. The wave constructions were studied first and then tested one by one. From the result it would be concluded the extension percentage of different grades were in descending order with slight variation only in case of BWC. It was also seen from tenacity values of different grades that were also in descending order being symmetrical to the quality ratio values being exception in case of BWD and BWspl, However from quality ratios, Tenacity and extension percentage values obtained in the investigation it was seen that no definite consistence exists between the grades as per accepted order of the grades from top to bottom.

Objectives:

To predict the strength of jute yarn from the physical properties of the fibers from which the yarn is spun and to relate to commercial grading.

Methodology:

In this investigation Tossa jute (Corchorus olitorius), white jute(Corchorus Capsularies), classified into six grades, namely BWspl, BWA, BWB, BWC, BWD, BWE, studied first and then tested one by one. Breaking Tenacity and breaking elongation of yarns and work of rupture taken from the fabrics under investigation have been determined by Universal Testing Machine INSTRON, Capacity 100 kg. Test work was done in the standard atmosphere of temp.(20 ± 2?) C and RH (65±2)%. The rate of straining employed was 5% of the test length per minute. Time to break the filament was between 6 sec and 18 sec. Load and breaking extension were automatically recorded on the chart from which Tenacity and breaking extension percentage were calculated. The records were taken under the conditions. Work of rupture for each fiber was determined from area under load elongation curve and from this specific work of rupture was calculated for fibers of each grade.

Achievement/Findings:

The value of Tenacity obtained of all the six samples were sufficient high compared to Meredith’s Tenacity value of jute, and therefore higher quality ratios in yarn may be expected. The quality ratio of yarns have been in descending order, together with the corresponding average values of the fiber properties. From the data the extension percentage of different grades were in descending order with slight variation only in case of BWC. It was also seen from tenacity values of different grades that were also in descending order being symmetrical to the quality ratio values being exception in case of BWD and BWspl, However from quality ratios, Tenacity and extension percentage values obtained in the investigation it was seen that no definite consistence exists between the grades as per accepted order of the grades from top to bottom. But the quality ratio values obtained by M/S. James Mackie and sons Limited (BWA 8 lbs 146%, 1o lbs 154%, BWB 8 lbs 136.5% 10 lbs 143%, BWC 8 lbs 114% 10 lbs 120% , BWD 8 lbs 95.5% 10 lbs 100%, BWE 8 lbs 81% 10 lbs 85%) showed consistence between all the grades from top to bottom. Tenacity values obtained in the investigation were comparatively high but quality ratio values obtained by Experimental Spinning Mills seem to be low.
