Improvement of Irrigation System Performance and Assessment of Irrigation Water Quality at BAU Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Irrigation treatments showed significant effect on yield and other contributing characters of rice. The highest grain yield (7.75 t/ha) was found in treatment T₃, its water use efficiency was also the highest which is 57.83 kg/ha/cm (0.58 kg/m³). The lowest grain yield (6.01 t/ha) was found in treatment T₁ and the yields for treatments T₂ and T₄ were found as 6.65 t/ha and 7.48 t/ha, respectively. The highest water requirement (110 cm) was found in treatment T₁ and the lowest (80 cm) in treatment T₄. The highest grain yield of 7.26 t/ha was obtained with V1 (BRRIdhan 49) and 6.67 t/ha in V2 (BINA-7). Considering the interaction effects, the highest grain yield of 8.46 t/ha was obtained in V1T₄_, second highest as 7.81 t/ha, was obtained in V2T₃. The study revealed that different irrigation treatments had significant effect on length of panicle, grain yield, number of spikelets per panicle, harvest index, number of effective tillers/hill, number of filled grains per panicle, straw yield, at various levels of significance. No significant difference on Plant height, number of unfilled grains per panicle and 1000-grain weight were found for various irrigation treatments. Better maintenance of both lined and unlined irrigation canal is essential in order to reduce the conveyance loss and hence to improve irrigation system performance at BAU farm. The various irrigation water quality indicators such as, total dissolved solids (TDS), sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP) and residual sodium bi-carbonate (RSBC) were calculated. All these values were found within the safe limit indicating that the water can safely be used for irrigation purpose.

Objectives:

The main objectives of the study are;

1) Quantification of irrigation water used for rice and wheat.

2) Determination of ET for rice and wheat.

3) Judicious irrigation scheduling.

4) Determination of crop water productivity for rice and wheat.

5) Reduction of conveyance loss and field loss.

6) Study the recharge and depletion characteristics of ground water, and

7) Determination of irrigation water quality parameters including arsenic.

Methodology:

A field experiment was carried out at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) farm during Aman Season (09.08.2010 to 21.11.2010) to find out the effect of alternate wetting and drying (AWD) irrigation method on water productivity and production of rice. The experimental layout was made using split-plot design (SPD) with two high yielding varieties of rice V1 (BRRI dhan49) and V2 (BINA-7) and four irrigation treatments viz. rainfed (T₁), water applied to make 5 cm submergence when the water level within the observation pipe fell 15, 20 and 25 cm below ground level and were denoted as T₂_, T₃ and T₄, respectively. Perforated pipes were installed in the plots according to IRRI guideline to measure depletion of water level by using graduated scale. Polythene sheets were used along the inside edges of the ridges of each plot to check seepage from in and out of the plots. During land preparation and as top dressing recommended doses of fertilizers were applied. Herbicide and insecticide were used as and when necessary.
