Efficacy of Mahogany Seed Kernel Extract Against Ufra Disease of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Incidence of damaged tiller increased sharply from 5.37 to 61.36% with increase of the concentration of mahogany seed kernel extract from 3 to 9% due to severe phytotoxic effect of mahogany seed kernel extract on rice plant. In contrast, only 3.77% damaged tiller was recorded with Furadan 5G.Ufra-1 Incidence ranged from 4.21 to 32.68% in mahogany extract treated plots compared to 0 and 46.25% in healthy and diseased control respectively. Again, the incidence of ufra-2 was 11.96% with 9% mahogany seed extract where it was 16.37% in diseased control. The incidence of Ufra-3 varied from 3.62 to 13.52 % in mahogany extract treated plots compared to 17.34% in diseased control. Total ufra incidence ranged from 19.79 to 61.75% in all the mahogany extract treated plots where it was 79.96% in diseased control. Spraying of mahogany seed kernel extract did not show satisfactory performance in term of healthy tiller production as it resulted in higher incidence of damaged tiller. Healthy tiller ranged from only 14.14 to 32.88% in three different concentrations of mahogany seed kernel extract. Higher percentage of healthy tiller (77.41%) was recorded when Furadan 5G was broadcasted as chemical control which differed significantly from all other treatments. Grain yield reduced drastically when mahogany seed kernel extract was sprayed at different concentrations and among the three concentrations, the highest yield (2.14gm/panicle) was recorded with 3% solution. On the other hand, yield was 4.66 and 4.38 gm/panicle in case of healthy control and Furadan 5G, respectively.

Objectives:

To test the efficacy of mahogany seed kernel extract against ufra disease of rice.

Methodology:

The pot experiment was conducted in the net house of Plant Pathology Division of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) during T.aman, 2009 following Completely Randomized Design with three (3) replications. Three concentrations of mahogany seed kernel extract (3, 6 and 9%) mixed with emulsifier (detergent at 1%) were tested against ufra disease. Previously inoculated seedlings of BR3 were transplanted (5 seedlings per pot) in earthen pots (25 cm diameter). Mahogany seed kernel extract was applied twice, first at 20 DAT and the second at 15 days interval. A standard check (Furadan 5G at 1 kg a.i. /ha) and two control treatments (healthy and diseased) were also maintained.
