Evaluation of Advanced Breeding Materials Against Bacterial Blight (bb)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A total of 52 advanced breeding lines including resistant and susceptible checks were used as test materials. The most virulent and reference isolate BXO9 of BB in Bangladesh was used for artificial inoculation. Special type of scissors was used in leaf clipping method. Peptone Sucrose Agar (PSA) medium was used for culturing BXO9 on artificial medium. Field screening was done following IRRI method. In the field, five hills were transplanted in a line with susceptible check (Purbachi) at every 10 lines. All the test entries were inoculated with BXO9 at around maximum tillering stage by leaf clipping method. Data were collected 21 days after inoculation. Per cent damaged leaf area and disease severity were recorded following SES 1996, IRRI, Philippines. Among the tested materials only one entry IR77542-551-1-1-1-1-2 showed moderately resistant (MR) reaction in Boro 2009-10. Another entry IR77542-234-1-1-1-1-3 showed moderately susceptible (MS) reactions against BB. The results were sent to Plant Breeding Division, BRRI for developing durable BB resistant rice variety in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

All of the test materials were supplied from the Plant Breeding Division, BRRI under different research areas.
