Quantifying the Physiological Resistance of Rice to Sheath Blight Using Detached Tiller Method in Boro, 2009-2010

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at plant pathology laboratory of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) to find out the resistance source of rice against sheath blight disease. When the variety reached at maximum tillering stage tillers were detached from hill and placed in a test tube which was filled with distilled water. Single sclerotia were transferred below 1 cm of the second collar, on the inner side of the sheath. This provides an environment where air is saturated with humidity. The whole materials were placed under room condition in the laboratory. Seven days after inoculation sheath blight disease was assessed depending on different parameters. None of the materials were found resistant against Sheath blight disease. Among the forty-eight tested materials, none of the material performed as physiologically resistant against rice sheath blight disease. A total of nineteen materials demonstrated highest sheath blight severity, while sixteen demonstrate moderate physiological resistance against rice sheath blight disease. Only six viz. Dular, Baktulsi, Jatta, Darial, Katakatra and BRRI dhan48 showed good physiological resistance against rice sheath blight disease.

Objectives:

To find out the resistance source of rice against sheath blight disease

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at plant pathology laboratory of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) during 2009-10 to find out the resistance source of rice against sheath blight disease. BRRI released popular variety BR11 was used as test variety. At maximum tillering stage tillers were detached from hill and placed in a test tube which was filled with distilled water. Seven day old and 1.5 ± 3 mm diameter sclerotia were selected for inoculation purpose. Single sclerotia were transferred below 1 cm of the second collar, on the inner side of the sheath. Test tube with inoculated tillers were placed in plastic tube racks and then sprayed with distilled water and covered with transparent plastic bag. This provides an environment where air is saturated with humidity. The whole materials were placed under room condition in the laboratory. Seven days after inoculation sheath blight disease was assessed depending on different parameters. Data on number of lesion, length of each lesion, the maximum distance between the inoculum and the furthest lesion, presence or absence of lesion with thick and dark margin, status of the leaf blade just next to the inoculation site-alive or dead and disease severity were recorded.
