Evaluation of New Chemicals Against Bacterial Blight (bb)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In case of Purbachi in T. Aus, 2009 season, only ILA was reduced significantly by applying chemicals as compared to disease control. Initially (two weeks after 1st spray) sinozol performed better than bactisol but finally (one week after 2nd spray) both of the chemicals performed equal. In case of BRRI dhan48 (T. Aus, 2009), there was no significant inhibitory effect of the chemicals on BB development. Although a significant difference was observed both in DS and DI initially, finally all the parameters showed insignificant effect as compare to disease control. During T. Aman 2009, higher doses of chemicals (600 g/ha) inhibited BB, but not efficiently. The yield contributing characters such as grain sterility (%), thousand grain weights (TGW) and grain yield of rice variety Purbachi were not influenced significantly among the treatments in both the seasons. Only grain sterility (GS) was lower in all chemical sprays in T. Aman but similar in T. Aus from the disease control plot. Though, bacterial blight is an alarming disease in Bangladesh, unfortunately, still there is no any effective chemical to combat this disease. Therefore, further study is urgent need to search the effective chemical(s) in controlling BLB disease in Bangladesh.

Objectives:

To find out the effective chemical(s) for successful control of BB under field condition.

Methodology:

The experiments were conducted during T. Aus and T. Aman, 2009 seasons. The test varieties were Purbachi and BRRI dhan48 in T. Aus, and only Purbachi in T. Aman season. The unit plot size was 3 m x 2 m with a planting distance of 20 cm x . The experiments were laid out in randomized block design with three replications. The plant was inoculated at maximum tillering stage by leaf clipping method with the pathogen of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (BXO9). Two new chemicals such as Bactisol and Sinozol of Bismerthiazol group were used as test chemicals. The first spray was done 4 days after inoculation and second spray was applied 14 days after first spray. Only recommended doses of the tested chemicals were used in T. Aus. and an additional flat dose 600 g/ha with the recommended doses were used in T. Aman. Data were collected two times, firstly two weeks after first spray and secondly one week after second spray. Data of infected leaf area (ILA), Relative lesion length (RLL), Disease index (DI) and Disease score (DS) were collected according to SES, IRRI. The relative lesion length (RLL) was calculated using the formula RLL= 100 X and disease index (DI) using formula DI= 100 X . The grain yield, 1000 grain weight and grain sterility were recorded during harvesting of the crop.
