Chemical Control of Brown Spot Disease of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To control the brown spot disease of rice a total of eight fungicides were evaluated under natural field condition. The highest percentage (14.0) of spotted grain was obtained in control and the lowest (5.3%) was in Tall treated plot. The chemicals Tall and Rovral reduced the spotted grain significantly compared to control. Other fungicides found ineffective against grain spotting. None of the fungicides could enhance healthy grain production. Thousand gains weight was not varied much among the tested fungicides. The best control of the disease in flag leaf stage was Rovral folloed by Tall and the best control of spot in second leaf was observed in Tall followed by Rovral. However, the effect of Rovral and Tall on brown spot in both the leaves was statistically similar. Both the chemicals showed excellent compared to other chemicals. Reduction of the total leaf spots over control was 73% and 70% obtained by Tall and Rovral respectively. Effect of fungicidal spray was found significant (P<0.05%) with respect to the percent incidence of B. oryzae Significant decrease in seed infection with B. oryzae compared to control was observed in Rovral treated plots and this was followed by Tall. Sedazole was found to reduce the rate of seed infection with Curvularia lunata. Lower seed infection with Curvularia lunata was found by tall and Rovral application.

Objectives:

To find out the effective chemicals against brown spot disease

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur during T. Aman 2009 under natural disease incidence following RCB design with 3 replications. Normal agronomic practices were followed during crop production. A total of 8 fungicides namely, Sedazole (500ml/ha) CP-Zim (500 gm/ha), Mine (500 gm/ha), Antracol (1.5 kgl/ha), Cluster (750 gm/acre), Tall (500 ml/L), Seovit (2.5kg/ha) and Rovral (1 kg/ha) were tested. Rice variety BRRI dhan46 was used for this purpose. Thirty five day old seedlings were transplanted in 3 x 2 m unit plot at 20 x 15cm spacing. TSP and MP fertilizers were applied during final land preparation and Urea was applied as top dress in 3 equal splits. All the fungicides were applied twice at booting and then at 15 days after 1st spray. At crop maturity stage, 20 tillers from each plot were collected randomly. The disease was recorded on flag leaf and second leaf of each tiller as number of spots per leaf. Individual hills from central 1m² were harvested separately. After threshing, grains from each of the hill were collected and data on per cent healthy, unfilled and spotted grain were recorded. Weight of randomly selected 1000 seeds was recorded and adjusted to 14% moisture content. The incidence of seed-borne fungi associated with seed was determined by modified blotter method using 200 seeds per sample.
