Efficacy of Neem Seed Kernel Extract Against Ufra Disease of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The pot experiment was conducted in the net house. Three concentrations of neem seed kernel extract mixed with emulsifier were tested against ufra disease. Previously inoculated seedlings of BR3 were transplanted in earthen pots. Neem seed kernel extract was applied twice. Furadan 5G (1 kg a.i./ha) as standard check and two control treatments (healthy and diseased) were also maintained. Incidence of damaged tiller was 4.71% and 5.01% with 5% and 10% solution of neem extract respectively whereas; it was 12.60% with 15% solution of neem extract. Ufra-1 Incidence ranged from 4.27 to 33.51% in neem extract treated plots compared to 0 and 43.89% in healthy and diseased control, respectively. Again, the incidence of ufra-2 was 12.95% with 15% neem seed kernel extract whereas it was 27.19% in diseased control. The incidence of Ufra-3 varied from 3.51 to 7.11% in neem extract treated plots compared to 13.46% in diseased control. Total ufra incidence ranged from 27.10-57.21% in all the neem extract treated plots whereas it was 84.54% in diseased control. In neem extract treated pots, healthy panicles varied from 38.08-65.11% with the yield of 2.02-3.95 g/panicle. Application of neem seed kernel extract at 10% produced the yield 3.95 g/panicle which was statistically similar to the yield recorded with Furadan 5G. The results indicated that application of neem seed kernel extract at 10% and 15% concentration were found effective against ufra disease. Application of neem seed kernel extract at 15% resulted higher percentage of damaged tillers due to phytotoxicity effect and thereby decreased the percentage of healthy tiller and yield.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The pot experiment was conducted in the net house of Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur during T. Aman, 2009 following Completely Randomized Design with three replications. Three concentrations of neem seed kernel extract (5, 10 and 15%) mixed with emulsifier (1% detergent) were tested against ufra disease. Previously inoculated seedlings of BR3 were transplanted (5 seedlings/pot) in earthen pots (25 cm diameter). Neem seed kernel extract was applied twice, first at 20 DAT and the second at 15 days after first spray. Furadan 5G (1 kg a.i./ha) as standard check and two control treatments (healthy and diseased) were also maintained.

Furadan 5G treated pots produced 77.93% healthy panicles with yield of 4.10 g/panicle and in contrast, 0% healthy panicle produced a very low yield of 0.29 g/panicle in the diseased control pots. In neem extract treated pots, healthy panicles varied from 38.08-65.11% with the yield of 2.02-3.95 g/panicle. Application of neem seed kernel extract at 10% produced the yield 3.95 g/panicle which was statistically similar to the yield recorded with Furadan 5G. The results indicated that application of neem seed kernel extract at 10% and 15% concentration were found effective against ufra disease.
