Efficacy of Mahogany Seed Kernel Extract Against Ufra Disease of Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The pot experiment was conducted in the net house of Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) during T. Aman, 2009. Three concentrations of mahogany seed kernel extract (3, 6 and 9%) mixed with emulsifier (1% detergent) were tested against ufra disease. Previously inoculated seedlings of BR3 were transplanted (5 seedlings/pot) in earthen pots (25 cm diameter). Mahogany seed kernel extract was applied twice, first at 20 DAT and the second at 15 days after first spray. Furadan 5G (1 kg a.i./ha) as standard check and two control treatments (healthy and diseased) were also maintained. Incidence of damaged tiller increased sharply from 5.37-61.36% with the increase of mahogany seed kernel extract concentration from 3-9% due to increase of its phytotoxicity on rice plant. Only 3.77% damaged tiller was recorded with Furadan 5G. Total ufra incidence ranged from 19.79-61.75% in all the mahogany extract treated plots and 79.96% in diseased control plots. Spraying of mahogany seed kernel extract did not perform well in terms of healthy tiller production as it resulted in higher incidence of damaged tiller. Healthy tiller ranged from only 14.14-32.88% in three different concentrations of mahogany seed kernel extract. Grain yield reduced drastically when mahogany seed kernel extract was sprayed at different concentrations. Among the three concentrations, the highest yield (2.14g/panicle) was recorded in 3% extract concentration. On the other hand, yield was 4.66 and 4.38 g/panicle in healthy control and standard check Furadan 5G, respectively.

Incidence of damaged tiller increased sharply from 5.37-61.36% with the increase of mahogany seed kernel extract concentration from 3-9% due to increase of its phytotoxicity on rice plant. Only 3.77% damaged tiller was recorded with Furadan 5G. Ufra-1 Incidence ranged from 4.21-32.68% in mahogany extract treated plots compared to 0-46.25% incidence in healthy and diseased control plots, respectively. Again, ufra-2 incidence was 11.96% in 9% mahogany seed extract whereas 16.37% in diseased control. Ufra-3 incidence varied from 3.62-13.52% in mahogany extract treated plots compared to 17.34% in diseased control plots. Total ufra incidence ranged from 19.79-61.75% in all the mahogany extract treated plots and 79.96% in diseased control plots. Spraying of mahogany seed kernel extract did not perform well in terms of healthy tiller production as it resulted in higher incidence of damaged tiller. Healthy tiller ranged from only 14.14-32.88% in three different concentrations of mahogany seed kernel extract. Higher percentage of healthy tiller (77.41%) was recorded in Furadan 5G which significantly differed from all other treatments. Grain yield reduced drastically when mahogany seed kernel extract was sprayed at different concentrations. Among the three concentrations, the highest yield (2.14g/panicle) was recorded in 3% extract concentration. On the other hand, yield was 4.66 and 4.38 g/panicle in healthy control and standard check Furadan 5G, respectively.
