Chemical Control of Rice Blast Disease, Boro 2009

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In nursery, the incidence of leaf blast was reduced by all the fungicides tested compared to the control. The mean reduction of blast incidence by Nativo (72.2%) and Greenzeb (69.5%) was comparable with standard check fungicide (77.0%). In two trials Nativo reduced the %DLA by 82.1 and 86.3%, while the corresponding results for Greengeb were 85.7 and 92.4%,respectively. The reduction by standard check Trooper was 80.0 and 92.4%, respectively. In both the trials both Greenzeb and Nativo reduced the disease by more than 80% and may be recommended for control of blast disease.

Objectives:

To find out effective chemicals against blast disease.

Methodology:

Five fungicides were tested against blast disease in blast nursery of Plant Pathology Division, BRRI (Trial 1) and in farmer’s field of Feni (Trial 2) during Boro, 2009. In nursery, artificial inoculation was done using blast infested chopped seedlings of the previous year (preserved in deep freezer). Susceptible variety BRRI dhan29 was used as test material and Nizersail as border of the test bed. Dry seeds of BRRI dhan29 were sown in blast nursery. Agronomic management was done as per usual practice. Polyethylene cover was used to preserve moisture and prevent seedlings against cold injury. Inoculation was done at twenty-one days after seeding. First spray of fungicides was done after appearance of visible blast lesion on leaf and second spray was done after 15 days of first spray. The leaf disease incidence and diseased leaf area (DLA) was taken from first and second leaf of each of the 20-30 randomly sampled seedlings.
