Papaya Mealy Bug, Paracoccus Marginatus (hemiptera: Pseudococcide): a New Record in Bangladesh and Their Infestation Status

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field survey was conducted in different regions of the country viz. Gazipur, Norshingdi, Jessore, Sylhet, Rangpur and Pabna during 2008-10 for documenting the pest status of mealy bug attacking different crops. It was revealed that the mealy bug, Paracoccus marginatus was first recorded in Bangladesh during 2008 cropping season and there after it has been emerged as a major threat to papaya along with different crops. It was found to attack other crops such as guava, ber, custard apple, eggplant and okra with varying levels of infestation. The mealy bug attack in different crops was quite severe in Gazipur and Norsingdi compared other regions of the country. The population dynamics of mealy bug indicated that the pest population remained extremely severe during April to May.

Objectives:

To explore the information pertaining to presence, pest status as well as population pattern of papaya mealy bug attacking papaya and other crops.

Methodology:

Field survey was conducted in different regions of the country viz. Gazipur, Norshingdi, Rangpur and Pabna during 2008-10 with the purpose to explore the information pertaining to presence, pest status as well as population pattern of papaya mealy bug attacking papaya and other crops. Three fields for each crop, viz. papaya, guava, ber, custard apple, eggplant and okra were randomly selected. In each field 15 plants were again selected randomly for counting mealy bug population. Mealy bug population was counted from the 6 leaves of each plant with the help of a magnifying glass. Six observations were done in each crop starting from the initiation of the pest attack at an interval of 15 days. For studying the population dynamics of mealy bug data were recorded at weekly interval only from Gazipur location in papaya.
