Development of Ipm Packages for Insect Pests of Cabbage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were undertaken at farmers’ field of Nangarpur, Jessore and Joydebpur, Gazipur to evaluate the IPM package comprised of hand picking and innundative release of parasitoids to control leaf-eating caterpillars of cabbage. At both the locations, head infestation in the IPM plots were significantly less than the sprayed plots (5.5 times at Jessore and 7.5 times at Joydebpur). Number of DBM and Common cutworm (Spodoptera litura) larvae per cabbage head was also significantly less in the IPM plots than the non-IPM plots. The yield of IPM plots were also significantly higher (1.29 times at Jessore and 1.37 times at Joydebpur) than the non-IPM plots.

Objectives:

To develop integrated management packages to control insect pests of cabbage.

Methodology:

This study has been started from September 2008 in the farmer's field of Nongarpur, Jessore and from December 2008 in the experimental field of Entomology Division, BARI, Gazipur. The unit plot size was 20 x 20m and a distance of 200 m2 was maintained between the IPM and Non-IPM plots. There were three dispersed replications and the experiment was set following RCB design. There were two treatments: 1) IPM trials comprises of hand picking of infested leaves and weekly release of egg parasitoid, Tricogramma chilonis (@ 1 gm parasitised eggs/ha/week) and larval parasitoid Bracon hebetor (800-1000 adult /ha/week), 2) Farmers’ practice – spraying of synthetic parathyroid insecticide (Cymbush 10 EC @ 1 ml/liter of water) at every three days interval. Numbers of healthy and infested heads were counted and recorded from randomly selected 2m² area of each treatment replicates at 7 days interval. Treatment wise percent head infestation was calculated from the pooled data of five observations at Jessore and seven observations at Joydebpur. Number of DBM and common cutworm larvae were counted and recorded from ten randomly selected heads at 07 days interval.
