F4 Generation Advanced Through Rapid Generation Advance (rga) Technique.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted with the objective to isolate of improved breeding lines having high iron. Progenies of 12 crosses involving parents with high iron content advanced to F4 through RGA technique were grown in Boro season. Fifty to sixty progenies with improved plant type were selected from F2 population per cross and composite the seeds. Fe and Zn analysis we identified 180 progenies with iron contents more than 10 ppm.

Objectives:

Isolation of improved breeding lines having high iron.

Methodology:

Progenies of 12 crosses involving parents with high iron content advanced to F4 through RGA technique were grown in Boro season. The RGA method was used with a random sample of 400-500 F2 progenies cross. Photo induction was given 10 hours by covering the plants with black cloth from 5 pm to 8 am at 10 days after seeding. Fifty to sixty progenies with improved plant type were selected from F2 population per cross and composite the seeds. The same process was followed for growing F3 generation. In F4 generation, panicle to row method was followed and transplanted in normal field condition. Thirty-old day seedlings were transplanted @ single seedling with a spacing of 20 x 20 cm. fertilizers @ 80:60:40:20 kg NPKS/ha was applied. All amounts of P, K& S were applied at the time of final land preparation. Nitrogen was applied in 3 equal splits at 10, 30 & 50 days after transplanting.

Achievement/Findings:

A total of 180 progenies were selected from twelve crosses based on agronomic performance. The F5 seeds of each plant were divided into two halves. One-half of the seeds were sun dried and milled at 14% moisture. Milling was done by test tube mill and sent to Adelaide, Australia for analysis of Fe and Zn content. Based on the Fe and Zn analysis we identified 180 progenies with iron contents more than 10 ppm.
