Integrated Management of Fruit Fly, Bactrocera Dorsalis Attacking Mango, Guava and Orange

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field studies were undertaken in the Lac Research Station and farmer’s mango orchard at Chapai Nawabgong, farmer’s guava orchard at Bagarpara, Jessore and farmer’s orange orchard at Byanibazar, Sylhet during 2008 and 2009 to evaluate different management tactics against fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis. Among the different treatments, IPM package comprising of sanitation, use of methyl eugenol pheromone trapping along with community approach significantly reduced the pest population in all the three studied crops. However, the highest trap catch was recorded in orange followed by mango and guava.

Objectives:

To develop an effective management package against fruit fly of mango, guava and orange.

Methodology:

Studies were undertaken in the LRS mango orchard at Chapai Nawabgong, farmer’s mango orchard at Shibgong, Chapainawabgong in Fazli variety, in farmer’s guava orchard at Bagarpara, Jessore and farmer’s orange orchard at Biani Bazar, Sylhet during 2008 and 2009 cropping season. There were three treatments, IPM practice, Insecticide spray (sumithion 50 EC) and untreated control. IPM practice consisted of sanitation (weekly removal of infested fruits), use of methyl euginol pheromone trap (trapping was started when the fruits became matured but not ripened) and community approach were practiced and in farmer’s practiced only insecticides were sprayed at 10 days interval. The experiment was set following RCB design with 4 replications. One plant was considered as a treatment replication. Data on fruit fly infestation was recorded during harvesting.
