Kenaf and mesta are two fibre producing crop after jute and considered as raw materials for the production of paper-pulp. Farmers are using its stem in vegetable garden, betel leaves plantations and as fuel. spiral borer (Agrilus acutus) and Mealy bug (Pseudococcus virgatus) are two important pests of kenaf and mesta. Mealy bug (Pseudococcus virgatus) mainly attacks on the top shoot of the plant, which blocks growth of top-shoot, causes shortening of internodes and makes plant bushy as well as stunted. In case of severe attack, plants die. The development of kenaf and mesta varieties with resistance to spiral borer and mealy bug is a prime need which are practical and environmental friendly for controlling these pests. In this regard, screening programme was undertaken to find out sources of tolerance/resistance in kenaf and mesta germ plasm against spiral borer and mealy bug. Among the 31 accessions tested in the field of Pakhimara, all accessions were found free from mealy bug. But only 4 lines (4291, 5027, 5028 and 5029) were found completely free from spiral borer and mealy bug

1. To study the Kenaf and Mesta germ plasm for resistance/tolerance against spiral borer and mealy bug.

2. To reduce the use of pesticides and keep the environment pollution free.

The experiment was carried out during the year 2012 with 31 selected accessions of kenaf with two check varieties HC-95 and HS-24 were screened against spiral borer and mealy bug. Screening of kenaf and mesta germ plasm against spiral borer and mealy bug were done in the experimental plots of Gene Bank Department. Some selected accessions of kenaf and mesta were sown the experimental field at Pakhimara, Patuakhali. in line with three replications. The recommended package of agronomic practices for mesta cultivation were followed from sowing onwards. No plant protection measure with a view to facilitate maximum infestation of insect. Observation regarding percent of plant infestation (PPI) and amount of plant damage (APD) were recorded during the infestation period from the plots as per following formula. Data were collected from the experimental field at Pakhimara, Patuakhali.

Spiral borer (Agrilus acutus) and Mealy bug (Pseudococcus virgatus) are two important pests of kenaf and mesta. Spiral borer makes spiral shape gall at the basal region of the stem for what gall region become weak and as a result the stem cannot withstand at any sudden jerks resulting from the windy rainy weather and cause considerable loss of yield. Mealy bug attacks in the top shoot of the plant, which blocks growth of top-shoot, causes shortening of internodes and bushy as well as stunted. Use of the pesticides to control these pests is costly and hazardous to human health and environment. The control of spiral borer with pesticide was difficult because the insect remain concealed most of the time of its life cycle inside the stem of the host plant. Thus the development of kenaf and mesta germplasm with resistance to spiral borer and mealy bug was thought to be a practical and environmental friendly means. Therefore, screening programme of kenaf and mesta cultivars of diversified germplasm against spiral borer and mealy bug for identifying resistant germplasm of kenaf and mesta to develop new insect resistant variety. Among the 31 accessions tested in the field of Pakhimara, all accessions were found free from mealy bug. But only 4 lines (4291, 5027, 5028 and 5029) were found completely free from spiral borer and mealy bug.
