Preparation of Synthetic Dyes (monoazo Basic, Acid and Pigment) Suitable for Dyeing of Jute .

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of Chemical Processing Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1997. Three kinds of synthetic monoazo dyes like Chrysoidine (Cl Basic Orange 2), Para Red (Cl Pigment Red I) and Orange II(Cl Acid Orange 7) were prepared by direct coupling between a diazonium salt and a phenol or amine and then applied to jute fabric. The prepared dyes were evaluated. Chrysoidine and Para Red were found suitable for dyeing jute fabrics resulting in high washing, rubbing and light fastness with very good shade and color uniformity.

Objectives:

To find out a process for manufacturing of synthetic dyes (monoazo, disazo, red, orange, black etc.) by means of reaction with various chemicals and to apply them for dyeing jute goods.

Methodology:

Three kinds of synthetic monoazo dyes were prepared as follows. After preparation of these dyes, they were applied to jute fabrics and dyeing properties were studied.

i) Preparation of Chrysoidine (Cl Basic Orange 2-11270): Chrysoidine is a cationic monoazo basic dye. It was prepared by coupling benzene diazonium chloride with m-phenylene diamine.

ii) Preparation of Para Red (Pigment Red I-12070): It was prepared by coupling p-nitro aniline with ß-naphthol.

iii)Preparation of Orange II(Cl Acid Orange 7): This is an anionic monoazo dye.This dye was prepared from diazotised Sulphanilic acid and ß-naphthol.

Application of these prepared dyes of jute fabric:

I. Application of Chrysoidine : Chrysoidine is a cationic basic dye. It was applied to bleached jute fabric by basic dyeing method. Required amount of dye was pasted with acetic acid, dissolved by pouring hot water on constant stirring. Dyeing was carried out for 1 hour as usually.

II. Application of Para Red : First of all bleached CBC was padded with diazotised p-nitro aniline then padded with ß-naphthol solution. In both the cases the temperature was maintained below 10⁰C. A permanent red colour was produced in the fabric.

III. Application of Orange II : This is an acid dye. Actually it has not been possible to apply this colour to jute by acid dyeing method. So, it is not suitable for jute. The prepared dyed were evaluated by determination of fastness to washing, rubbing, light and penetration of dyes in dyed jute fabrics.

Three kinds of monoazo basic, acid and pigment dyes were prepared in order to apply them to jute having very good fastness properties i.e. suitable for jute. Azo dyes and pigments are the largest class of synthetic dyes. Their chromophore is an aromatic system joined to the azo group and the common auxochromes are NH₂, NR₂, OH. The usual method of preparation of azo dyes are by direct coupling between a diazonium salt and a phenol or an amine. Chrysoidine (Cl Basic Orange 2), Para Red (Cl Pigment Red I) and Orange II(Cl Acid Orange 7) were prepared maintaining the standard methods and were applied to jute fabrics. Their yields were satisfactory except Orange II. Chrysoidine and Para Red affained very good rubbing and washing fastness. Para red gave very good light fastness rating 6. The tinctorial power of Chrysoidine was found to be very high i.e. small amount of dye was required to produce deep shade having good penetration and color uniformity. From the study it is concluded that Chrysoidine and Para Red are suitable for dyeing jute fabrics and these dyes may be prepared for jute dyeing commercially.
