Yield Reduction Assessment of Hybrid Maize Due to Different Management Practices

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at Joydebpur, Jessore, Jamalpur, Hathazari and Raikhali during rabi season of 2003-2004 to assess the yield loss of hybrid maize (var. BARI Top Cross Hybrid Maize-1) due to omission of different management practices from recommended package (RP). Based on all locations, graded seeds (42.17g/100 seeds) with recommended package produced up to 7% more yields. But omission of different component technologies from RP reduced yield up to 37%. Last week of December sowing reduced maximum yield (20-37%). Omission of 40% chemical fertilizer, omission of irrigation at 60 DAE, omission of irrigation at 90 DAE or plant protection measures from recommended package reduced yield up to 30, 15, 17 and 8%, respectively.

Objectives:

To assess the yield loss of hybrid maize following the principle of omission of single component technology from recommended package.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farm of BARI, Joydebpur, RARS Jessore, Jamalpur, Hathazari and ARS Raikhali during the rabi season of 2003-2004. Seven treatments (T_1, Recommended package (RP): Timely sowing (November 15-20) + HYV (BARI Top Cross Hybrid Maize-1) + recommended fertilizer (250-52-100-40-5 kg NPKSZn/ha) + line sowing (75 cm x 25 cm) with ungraded seeds (i.e. 32.96 g/100 seeds) + irrigation at 30, 60, and 90 DAE + plant protection measures (use of seed treatment, fungicide and insecticide), T_2, RP with late sowing (December 25-30), T₃, RP - 40% chemical fertilizer, T₄, RP - irrigation at 60 DAE, T₅, RP - irrigation at 90 DAE, T₆, RP - plant protection measure and T₇, RP + bolder seeds (42.17 g/100 seeds) were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 5m x 4.5m. One third N and full quantity of PKSZn were applied as basal in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate. Seeds of maize were sown in lines on November 19-25 (optimum) and December 25-30 (late), 2003. A light irrigation was given to the crop for uniform emergence. The remaining N was top-dressed at 30 DAE for treatment T₄, and at 30 and 60 DAE for rest treatments. Irrigation was given at 30, 60 and 90 DAE. The crop was harvested 140-150 DAE and 130-145 DAE for optimum and late sowing, respectively. The data were analyzed statistically and means were compared using DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Sowing of hybrid maize during last week of December reduced yield severely. Omission of 40% chemical fertilizers or irrigation either 60 or 90 DAE from recommended package also reduces considerable yield of hybrid maize. Hence, complete recommended package must be followed for getting desirable yield of hybrid maize.
