Influence of Growth Regulator and Npk Fertilizer on the Growth and Yield of Small Sized Bitter Gourd

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In order to observe the influence of Growth Regulator and NPK Fertilizer on the Growth and Yield of Small Sized Bitter Gourd the experiments were conducted. The study revealed that application of different doses of plant growth regulators significantly influenced the flower initiation, synchrony of male-female flowers consequently the fruit setting. Spraying of GA3 induced male flower conversely ethopon induced female flowers. The higher number of fruits and fruit yield was recorded by the application of ethopon 100 and NAA 75 ppm.

Objectives:

1. To observe the effect of plant growth regulators on the synchrony of male female flowers and fruit setting. 2. To investigate the effect of Plant Growth Regulator application on fruit yield 3. To find out optimum doses of N, P, K-fertilizer for maximum yield and fruit quality of bitter gourd.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of the Crop Botany Department, BSMRAU during January to June 2008. The experiment was laid out in a RCBD having 3 replications. Locally collected bitter gourd cultivar BG 5, screened previously was used as a test material. Seeds were sown in polyethylene bags having soil with cow dung for germination and seedling rising. The seedlings were transplanted at the spacing of 1m x 1m. The following ten treatments were imposed for the experiment: T₁: GA3 20 ppm T₂: GA3 40 ppm T₃: GA3 60 ppm T₄: NA 50 ppm T₅_: NA 75 ppm T₆: NA 100 ppm T₇: E 100 ppm T₈: E 150 ppm T₉: E 200 ppm T₁₀: Control The selected growth regulators were applied at three times, first at seven days after seedling transplanting at the 6 to 8 leaves stage. The second and third doses were applied at 30 and 45 DAT, respectively with the help of hand sprayer. Mature fruits were harvested at 3 days interval up to aging of plants, and data on yield and yield attributes were recorded. The plants were terminally harvested at 120 DAT, and shoot dry matter was taken by drying the sample in an electric oven at 71⁰C for three days.

Achievement/Findings:

Plant growth regulators at different concentration showed a significant influence on the days to first flower. Application of GA3 60 ppm took the minimum number of days for the appearance of first female flower (34 to 35 DAT) which was about 12days earlier to control. Higher number of female flower was initiated by the application ethophon at the rate of 50 ppm. Application of GA3 was very effective for early male and female flowering. The total number of male and female flower was significantly influenced by the application of plant growth regulators and plant nutrient at different levels. The plants sprayed with ethopon at 200 ppm produced the highest number of female flowers and was significantly superior to all the other treatments followed by NAA at both concentration and GA3 at 50 ppm. The application of plant growth regulators at different concentrations significantly influenced sex ratio. Application of NAA, and ethopon produced lowest sex ratio suppressing male flower with increasing the female flowers. The effect of plant growth regulators was found to be highly significant on shoot weight of bitter gourd. Application of PGR greatly stimulated the fruit size of small sized bitter gourd. The highest number of fruits per plant was observed in ethopon 150 conversely the lowest was found in GA3 20 ppm. The highest fruit yield was recorded by the application of Ethopon 100 ppm (17% more) and NAA 100 ppm, (17-18% more) which was statistically identical with GA3 40 and GA3 60 ppm. Conversely control treatment produced lower fruit yield (7.87 t ha^-1).
