Screening of Local Varieties and Improved Genotypes for Evaluation of Iron and Zinc in Grain.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to select high yielding genotypes with special emphasis on high iron and Zinc content in grain. Thirty-one genotypes consisting modern varieties and land races were grown in T. Aman season. single seedling of 30 days old was transplanted per hill in 5.4 m plots at a spacing of 25 x 15 cm. Data were collected on different heads viz. days to 50% flowering, plant height and tillers per hill, days to maturity and grains per panicle and analyzed for iron and others. The germplasm showed Fe content ranging from 1.67 to 5.00 mg/kg at specific milling degree. The result indicated the difficulty of identifying germplasm with high Fe content in polish rice condition.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Thirty-one genotypes consisting modern varieties and land races were grown in T. Aman season. single seedling of 30 days old was transplanted per hill in 5.4 m plots at a spacing of 25 x 15 cm following RCBD design with 3 replications. Fertilizers @ 80:60:40:100:10 kg NPK, Gypsum & ZnSO4 per hectare were applied. All the fertilizers were applied at final land preparation except N, which was applied in splits at the rate of 30:30:20 at 15 days after transplanting (DAT), 35 DAT and PI stages. Data were collected on different heads viz. days to 50% flowering, plant height and tillers per hill, days to maturity and grains per panicle. Half kg of freshly harvested dried seeds of each entry was sent to IRRI for estimation of iron and Zinc content in rice grains.
