Study the Jute Staples Blended with Cotton and Synthetic Fibre.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of Spinning Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1993.Jutton yarns were prepared varying the proportions of jute and cotton fibers and some of their physical properties were compared with those of 100% cotton yarns. The fiber to fiber contact or cohesiveness of the fibers was increased when cotton was incorporated during processing. The blending of jute with equal proportion cotton reduces the yarn irregularity significantly and that the quality as measured by CSP values 1320, 1344, 1528 & 1650 for different yarns may be compared with the corresponding values of the same numbered cotton yarn.It was found that 9.8 tex yarns from the jute-cotton blends having ratio 40:60 was comparatively better and was as good as the cotton yarns.

Objectives:

Modification of jute by chemical means and investigation of its physic o-mechanical properties during textile processing after blended with or without cotton, rayon etc.

Methodology:

Jute fiber was cut into the staple length of 2 inches and treated with neutral sodium sulphite liquor in fiber liquor ratio of 1:5 at 165⁰C for 1 hour. The fiber samples thus sulphonated were blended with cotton fibers at four different properties: 20% jute and 80% cotton, 30% jute and 70% cotton, 40% jute and 60% cotton, 50% jute and 50% cotton. Four types of yarns having count number 20, 32, 40 and 60 were produced from each lap of the blended fibers using the cotton processing system. The quality of the yarns was tested measuring the yarn regularities for the thick and thin places, naps formations and turn per inch (TPI). the count and breaking strength of the yarns were also determined including the count strength product (CSP).

The chemically treated jute fiber was softer and tender than the raw jute fiber but harder than cotton fiber. 29.5 tex yarn, were spun from 100% jute fiber on the ring spinning frame, but the yarns were predominantly hairy with presence of prominently thick and thin places due to irregular and poor response of the fiber to drafting. The fiber to fiber contact or cohesiveness of the fibers was increased when cotton was incorporated during processing. The blending of jute with equal proportion cotton reduces the yarn irregularity significantly and that the quality as measured by CSP values 1320, 1344, 1528 & 1650 for different yarns may be compared with the corresponding values of the same numbered cotton yarn. As the proportions of cotton increases in the blends, the uniformity and quality values of the yarns approach gradually to those of the pure cotton yarns. It observed that 9.8 tex yarns obtained from jute-cotton blend having ratio 40:60; 30:70; 20:80; appears to be comparatively more improved and are as good as the same numbered cotton yarns. The 40:60 blends may be recommended and 9.8 tex yarn may be substantially be used for all textile materials.
