Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic resources conservation under on farm practices is enhanced in-situ preservation of germplasm in agri-horticultural crops. Local varieties are gradually being eroded and germplasm sources is become a problem by expanding monoculture, modern and hybrid varieties, land use planning and changing food habit. This has resulted in calls to promote community gene bank (CGB) as a complementary for ex-situ conservation, strategy and seed production of traditional varieties where evolutionary process is to be continued shaping this diversity, creating awareness and secure people’ control over their genetic resources. Participatory variety selection would be a strategy in national food dynamics to promote conservation and utilization of germplasm in mainstream agriculture for germplasm sourcing and crop improvement. Six locations at hills and plain districts in Bangladesh have been identified through survey and exploration to establish CGB where indigenous vegetables and minor cereal is priority crops to maintain in-situ conservation. The CGB has been designed to regenerate and preserved seeds by farmers according to their need and voluntary service to choose accession in participatory action. CGB are Suchana, Gazipur; Paharika, Bandarban; Prantik, Bandarban; Uttara, Thakurgaon, Aronno, Bagherhat and Jumrani, Khagrachhary. Twenty members in each CGB are involved to maintain germplasm supplied by PGRC, BARI.

Objectives:

1) To establish a strong linkage between PGRC and community people, especially rural household depend on farming. 2) To provide opportunity for evaluation of local varieties and to allow evolutionary process in PGR 3) To establish and strengthen local seed production-to-use chains with all stakeholders. 4) To increase availability of germplasm and information on their traditional uses through characterization and evaluation 5) To gather and disseminate knowledge on underutilized species. 6) To create community awareness on PGR importance through training and visit 7) To establish CGB through participatory involvement and sharing responsibility to protect natural heritage

Methodology:

The knowledge of PGR importance has been delivered through training, demonstration and participation of PGR values evaluation was the initial stage of CGB establishment. Under CGB program, CGB members have been evaluated by pretest questionnaire and opened consultation. Minimum thirty CGB will be established at thirty AEZ in Bangladesh sequentially. Six CGB already have been established in different location in order to fulfill the goal. Location was identified through survey of PGR food agriculture in a particular agro-ecological condition. Fifty farmers were invited to train on PGR and interested farmers were selected randomly for on farm conservation. Seed, seed preservation pot, note book, different types of poster and logistics support were provided among the groups. Field visit, meeting and discussions were held to follow up their activities. Maintained PGR by the participants were recorded. Monitoring indicator system fixed based on baseline survey through the questionnaire.

Community Gene Bank (CGB) is a parallel system of seed bank management initiatives by the community based on trust and credibility involving least cost in in-situ conservation. Considering the global approach on environment and PGR conservation strategies community gene bank is an alternative area to keep agricultural bio-diversity under natural management condition by the farmers who generated the materials since long aged practices. Establishment of community gene bank is a continuous process. Six community gene bank have established at different location in Bangladesh. Name of different community gene bank, their location and supplied seed sample are as Suchana, Gazipur-Amaranth , hyacinth bean & bottle gourd. Paharika, Bandarban- Amaranth (red), ash gourd, sweet gourd, snake gourd, brinjal, mask melon and foxtail millet. Prantik, Bandarban-Amaranth (grain), ash gourd, sweet gourd, snake gourd, brinjal, musk melon and foxtail millet. Uttara, Thakurgaon-Amaranth (leaf, stem, grain), ash gourd, sweet gourd, snake gourd, brinjal, musk melon and foxtail millet. Aronno, Bagherhat- Ash gourd, sweet gourd, snake gourd and kangkong. Jumrani, Khagrachhary-Amaranth (red leaf), lady's finger, sweet gourd, snake gourd, brinjal, kangkong and foxtail millet. Establishment of Community Genebank is a long term process. After establishment of CGB farmers will be able to protect their own PGR and it will create awareness and thereby they will understand the importance of their local traditional varieties.
