The present study was designed to monitor the fortnightly variations and occurrence of plankton population in respect to physicochemical parameters in the three fish ponds situated at grey terrace soil of Gazipur. During the study period air temperature was found varied from a minimum of 27.5 to a maximum of 290 C. Water temperature of the ponds fluctuated from 28 to 310 C. The pond water showed alkaline in nature. The pH was found to be varied from 7.4 to 8.2. The dissolved oxygen content of water fluctuated from 3.9 to 4.3. Free CO2 was ranged from 23 - 25mg/l. During the period of study CO3 alkalinity ranged from 35 to 38 mg/l. Total hardness were found to vary from 877 – 1100 mg/l. Phytoplankton abundance varied from 947- 1915 units/l. The distribution of zooplankton abundance varied from 3280- 4560 units/l. The maximum transparency, DO and diversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton were recorded in the month of August. Zooplankton diversity and abundance were poor in the month of April and May but Brachionus, Diaptomus showed highest abundance in these months. The present study has given an idea on the plankton population of the study area.

The present study is designed to monitor the fortnightly variations and occurrence of plankton population in respect to physicochemical parameters in the three fish ponds situated at grey terrace soil of Gazipur. 1. Qualitative and quantitative estimation of phytoplankton and zooplankton in three fish ponds in Gazipur. 2. Determination of physico-chemical parameters in three fish ponds in Gazipur. 3. Investigation of effect of physico-chemical parameters on plankton population.

The experiment was conducted in three fish ponds of Gazipur from January 2009 to June 2009. Plankton and water samples were collected monthly from January 2009 to June 2009 from three ponds. Samplings were made between 9.00 to 11.30 am. Ten liters of water were collected from each pond by a plastic bucket. Some water parameters were studied in the field and some were in the laboratory. Air and water temperature, transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen and CO2 were determined. Quantitative estimation of plankton was done by a Sedgewick-Rafter (S-R cell) cell with a wide mouth pipette. Microscopic identification up to genera level were performed by a compound electrical microscope and following the standard manual.

During the study period air temperature was varied from a minimum of 27.5 to a maximum of 290 C. Diversity and abundance of phytoplankton and zooplankton of three ponds are shown in Table 2 and Table 3, respectively. During the period of study the distribution of phytoplankton abundance varied from 947- 1915 units/l. The distribution of zooplankton abundance varied from 3280- 4560 units/l. The maximum abundance was recorded in pond 1. During the period of investigation, maximum transparency, DO and diversity of phytoplankton and zooplankton were recorded in the month of August when all dissolved solids, organic and inorganic materials were more diluted due to increase of water level. Zooplankton diversity and abundance were poor in the month of April and May but Brachionus, Diaptomus showed highest abundance in these months. Phytoplankton and zooplankton diversity and abundance was very poor during the experimental period. This might be due to less fertilization in the ponds. These ponds are not culturable ponds. This might be the reason for the poor diversity and abundance of the plankton population. The present study has given an idea on the plankton population of the study area. Further research to be conducted to develop the basic information of these ponds.
