Investigation for Resistance of Jute, Kenaf and Mesta Germplasm Against Fungal Diseases in Sick Bed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the fields of Central station, Dhaka and JAES, Manikganj to find out the sources for resistance against fungal diseases.A total of 35 lines were sown in sick bed. This plot was artificially inoculated with the culture of three fungus such as Macrophomina phaseolina, B.theobromae and S.rolfsii before 30 days of sowing. Recording of disease incidence started after final thining at 45 days and continued till average flowering stage. disease reaction was evaluated on the percentage of affected plant in each line and grouped as Resistant (R) . Moderately Resistant(MR), Susceptible (S) and Highly Susceptible (HS). Out of 35 lines/accessions 7 lines were found to be resistant ®, 20 lines were moderately resistant (MR) and renaming 8 lines were under susceptible and highly susceptible (HS) group.

Objectives:

1.To screened out the sources for resistant of germ plasm of jute, kenaf and mesta against different fungal pathogens.

2.To help the breeders to developed fungal diseases resistant variety.

Methodology:

A total of 35 lines including 26 lines of Capsularis and 9 lines of Olitorius were sown in sick bed at JAES following RCBD with three replications for screening against fungal diseases.Inoculation was prepared by growing cultures of the Macrophomina phaseolina on the wheat husk or on old jute seed powder medium.This pure culture was applied in the soil before final land preparation to build up inoculation potential. The seeds of each treatment was sown in a single row 3m long. At 45 and 60 days age of the plants inoculum was applied again in each row. To build up more inoculum potential rouged out diseased plants was spread into the soil time to time. Intercultural operations and application of fertilizer was done as usual.
