Planting Time Effects on Growth, Productivity and Seed Quality of Slender Grain Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Very recently a new rice variety is developed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University and available as BUdhan 1. The BUdhan 1 is exceptionally high yielding, slender and has mild aroma of cooked rice which is specially suitable for Polao, Biriani and Payes. This study were undertaken to examine the effect of planting time on growth, yield and seed quality of BU dhan 1. The study revealed that the new variety BUdhan 1 is most productive when it is planted on August 15. Other date of plantings before and after that date reduced the yield of the variety. The variety seems to be susceptible to produce a large number of sterile spikelets which needs be minimized to enhance the grain yield. Further, the variety has lodging tendency which also restrict to explore the yield potential. Therefore, other crop management practices should be developed so that the variety can resist to a certain degree of lodging under adverse climatic conditions.

Objectives:

To examine the effect of planting time on growth, yield and seed quality of newly released slender grain rice variety.

Methodology:

Field study was conducted during the rainy season (Aman) of 2008 at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University. The experiment was designed as a randomized complete block with three replications. Treatments were consisting of seven planting time of newly released slender grain rice variety BUdhan 1. The planting times of the variety were 1 July, 15 July, 1 August, 15 August, 1 September, 15 September and 1 October. Unit plot size of the experiment was 4 by 3m.All intercultural operations were done properly throughout the growing season. Insecticide was sprayed at different growth stages as a precautionary measure to keep the crop safe from insect attack. Finally, growth, yield and seed quality were recorded for analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the means were compared according to Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The pattern of dry matter accumulation differed in rice plants grown on different planting times. This variation was more pronounced in dry matter accumulation of panicles. Panicle dry weight increased gradually after 55 DAP and continued till maturity stage of earlier planted crops. But in late planted rice, dry matter accumulation completed within very short time especially when it was planted on October 1. In October 1 planted rice, dry matter accumulated in panicles after 85 DAP for a short period which resulted the least amount dry matter accumulation in panicles. The results indicated that grain yield of the variety was mostly determined by the degree of ripening percentage. Grain yield of the variety was 4.05 t ha-1 in July 1 planting and it increased with delay in planting and peaked at August 15 except the crop planted on August 1. As the crop of August 1 planted lodged severely and showed severe sterility (46.5%), the variety yielded only 3.89 t ha-1 during that planting time. The highest grain yield (5.27 t ha^-1) of the variety was recorded from August 15 planting because of its least sterility percentage (23.6%). Immediately after harvest, germination percentage was highest (86.3%) in seeds of August 15 planted crop. The crop planted either earlier or later than August 15 showed poor seed germination. This is because of degree of seed dormancy as well as seed deterioration. The new variety BUdhan 1 is most productive when it is planted on August 15. Other date of plantings before and after that date reduced the yield of the variety.
