Development of Regeneration Protocol for Plantlets of Interspecific Crosses of Okra and Feasibility Study of Hybrid Okra Variety Development for Commercial Use

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The major findings of the study under the report were the development of seven F₁s or hybrid genotypes during the growing season December/07 to February/08. Among the F₁ genotypes, three were form the interspecific crosses and highly sterile. The rest of the F₁ genotypes were placed for field trial along with their parental genotypes. In the 1st experiment crossing between cultivated and wild okra genotypes could not possible as the wild genotypes did not flower. Due to the unavailability of F₁s, the study of regeneration of protocol for embryo rescue could not be started. In order to smoothen the interspecific hybridization program synchronization of flowering between cultivated and wild okra should be emphasized. Further selection among the hybrid progeny so far obtained based on their desirable characteristics was suggested.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The investigation was carried out to examine the genetic aspect of some yield contributing characters and yellow mosaic virus resistance in okra. For this study the following experiment were conducted a) Four cultivated and one wild okra varieties were grown for crossing each of cultivated variety with wild type b) Four cultivated okra varieties were grown to make inter variety crossing
