Effect of Green Manuring with Dhaincha (sesbania Rostrata) and Sunhemp (crotalaria Juncea) on Aus Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Experimental field of the BSMRAU from July-June, 2007-2008 to investigate the effect of green manuring with Sesbania rostrata and Crotalaria juncea on rice productivity, on soil properties. The lowest growth duration and highest yield attributes and grain yield was obtained when green biomass of C. juncea was supplemented with inorganic N 80 kg ha^-1 which was statistically similar with S. rostrata with inorganic N 80 kg ha^-1. The yield had an increase of 187.3% and 22.7% compared to the control plot and the plot where N 80 kg ha-1 alone was supplemented, respectively. The highest SPAD value (41.9) was recorded in Crotalaria juncea supplemented with inorganic N 80 kg ha^-1 at 80 DAT. Results on soil properties indicated that green manuring had a beneficial impact on soil pH, organic-C, total N status and available P status. So, Sunhemp (Crotalaria juncea) with 60 kg N/ha and Dhaincha (Sesbania rostrata) supplemented with inorganic N 80 kg ha^-1 can be recommended or further trials are suggested for find out the most efficient green manuring crop.

Objectives:

(i) To study the effect of green manuring with Dhaincha (Sesbania rostrata) and Sunhemp (Crotalaria juncea) on soil properties and yield of transplanted aus rice. (ii) To find out the most efficient green manuring crop between Dhaincha (Sesbania rostrata) and sunhemp (Crotalaria juncea).

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the Experimental field of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University from July 2007 to June 2008. The experiment was conducted using the following treatments: S. rostrata +N0, S. rostrata +N₂0, S. rostrata +N₄0, S. rostrata +N₆0, S. rostrata +N₈0, C. juncea + N0, C. juncea + N₂0, C. juncea + N₄0, C. juncea + N₆0, C. juncea + N₈0, Control and N₈0. The experiment was laid in a RCBD with four replication. Unit plot size is 10m² (4m X 2.5m). After land preparation seed of both Dhaincha and Sunhemp were sown. Dhaincha and Sunhemp were cut, chopped by sharp knives after 60 days of emergence and incorporated with the experimental soil. A modern rice variety (BR24) was used as test crop in this experiment. At final land preparation required amount of TSP, MP, gypsum and Zinc sulphate were and Urea was top dressed. According to the objectives of the study, the related data were collected and analysis was done.

Achievement/Findings:

The lowest growth duration (104.3 days), maximum tiller hill-1 (9.2), highest no. of panicles hill-1 (7.4), highest no. of panicles m-2 (330.7), maximum panicle length (21.10), highest no. of filled grain panicle^-1 (97.17), lowest no. of loss grain panicle^-1 (2.20), highest no. of spikelets panicle^-1, maximum thousand grain weight (22.7g), highest straw yield (5.61 t ha^-1) and the highest grain yield (3.62 t ha^-1) was obtained when green biomass of C. juncea was supplemented with inorganic N 80 kg ha^-1 which was statistically similar with S. rostrata with inorganic N 80 kg ha^-1. The yield had an increase of 187.3% and 22.7% compared to the control plot and the plot where N 80 kg ha^-1 alone was supplemented, respectively. However, the highest N-use efficiency was observed in treatments where N 20 kg ha^-1 was supplemented with Crotalaria juncea and Sesbania rostrata. The highest SPAD value (41.9) was recorded in Crotalaria juncea supplemented with inorganic N 80 kg ha^-1 at 80 DAT and the lowest light interception reading (353.0) was recorded in Crotalaria juncea supplemented with inorganic N 80 kg ha^-1. SPAD value was decreased and light interception reading was increased with increasing DAT. Results on soil properties indicated that green manuring had a beneficial impact on soil pH, organic-C, total N status and available P status. So, Sunhemp (Crotalaria juncea) with 6 0kg N/ha and Dhaincha (Sesbania rostrata) supplemented with inorganic N 80 kg ha^-1 can be recommended or further trials are suggested for find out the most efficient green manuring crop.
