Searching of Bast Fibre Crops Against Root-knot Diseases ( Meloidogyne Sp.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the field of JAES, Manikganj following RCBD with three replications to find out sources for tolerant/resistant against nematode disease( Meloidogyne sp). Twenty-nine lines of jute (deshi and tossa), kenaf and mesta were screened against root knot nematode infested field of JAES. Out of 29 lines only 5 (3334, 3335, HS-24, SAMU/93 and CVL-1) were found tolerant.

Objectives:

1.To screened germplasms against root-knot diseases.

2.To help the breeders to develop the resistant varieties against root-knot

Methodology:

a) The plants were sown in sterilized soil following RCBD with three replications and was inoclutd with pure culture of Meloidogyne sp. at proper age of the plant. b) Preparation of inoclution: Tomato plants previously were grown in nematode free soil was inocluted by adding nematode infected roots of jute. After 60 days, egg mass of nematodes were collected from tomato root and incubated in a watch glass at 25^oC c) Selected germplasm materials were inocluted with the newly hatches larvae suspended in sterilized water ( 50 larvae/ml). Each plant was inocluted with 20 ml of this suspension.Following records were keppt: 1) Date of sowing of tomato plants 2)Date of sowing of germination materials 3) Date of inoclution 4) Observation of root-system of each material for gall formation time to time.
