Retting and Extraction of Whole Jute Plants Through the Application of Promising Micro-organisms at the Water Scares Jute Growing Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Most of the fibres produced by the jute growers of water scares jute growing areas are of very poor in quality. The experiment was undertaken in JAES, Jagir, Manikganj during 2000 with a view to explore the possibility of using the promising microbes (fungi) in retting jute applying directly to the green jute stems. In the present study, five different promising fungi were grown in plenty in the sterile wheat bran which were blended with water and sprinkled on the defoliated green jute plants. Among the five different fungi sporotrichum sp. could ret the jute within 11 days where the other fungi could not ret the green jute stems.

Objectives:

To explore the possibility of using the promising microbes in retting jute applying directly to the green jute stem.

Methodology:

Previously isolated five different promising fungi viz. Sporotrichum sp., Penicilium sp., Aspergillus sp., Mucor sp. and Rhizopus sp. were inoculated in sterile wheat bran media. After sufficient growth of microbes, the culture was blended with water and sprinkled on the defoliated green jute plants weighting 10 kg each. The rets were then covered with moist hessians and were kept till the completion of retting. Simultaneously a control was runing without praying the fungal culture. After sufficient time of retting all the rets were opened, fiber were extracted and the dried fiber were assessed and graded.

Achievement/Findings:

Among five fungi used in this study, only Sporotrichum sp. could ret the jute within 11 days and produced the fiber of the grade ‘C’. The other four fungi were unable to ret the jute.
