Preparation of Retting Inoculum from Banana Stem and Sun Hemp and Their Effect on the Acceleration of Jute Retting Speed

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Both banana plant and sunhemp are fibrous plants. It was assumed that there may be some microbes in these plants which can accelerate jute retting speed. The experiment was undertaken with a view to study the use of retting effluents of banana stem and sunhemp stems in accelerating jute retting speed and improvement of fibre quality of jute. The experiment was conducted in the green house of BJRI Central station during 2000. Retting time was range from 10-12 days with inoculum of sunhemp stems but the retting time range from 10-14 days with inoculum of banana stem. Fibre grade A’ and B’ was in inoculum of sunhemp retting and only grade B’ was in banana stem retting. In comparison with the fibre quality obtained from the two treatments, it was found that the jute fibres produced from retting with the inoculum of sunhemp plant stems were better than those from retted with inoculum of banana plant stems. Objectives:

To study the use of retting effluent of banana stem and sun hemp in the acceleration of jute retting speed and improving the fiber quality.

Methodology:

Pieces of banana stem and sun hemp stem were retted separately in the conical flask in the water of the same source and quality. Retting accelerator like urea @ 0.01% was added to the ret to accelerate the retting speed. Jute plants were collected from the experimental plot. Retting liquors were used separately in jute retting speed. Temperature, pH and Micro-flora of retting water at different stages of retting were recorded. Promising microbes were isolated from the retting effluent of banana stem and sunhemp stem and the quality produced fiber was assessed.

Achievement/Findings:

From the experimental result it was observed that there was no significant difference in fibre quality of jute retted with different percentage of banana stems retting inoculums. On the other hand, there was a significant difference in fibre quality of jute retted with different percentage of sunhemp stems retting inoculums, in which the higher percentage of retting inoculums used, the better the fibre quality. Retting time was ranged from 10-12 days with inoculums of sunhemp stems but the retting time ranged from 10-14 days with inoculum of banana stem. Fibres of grades A’ and B’ were obtained using inoculum of sunhemp retting and only of grade B’ was obtained using inoculums of banana stem. In comparison it was found that the jute fibres produced from retting with the inoculum of sunhemp plant stems were better than those from retted with inoculum of banana stems.
