Post Flood Rehabilitation and Adaptive Research Support Project

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

On the basis of experimental results the following findings were given as follows- a. Hybrid rice responded with 80-200kg/ha nitrogen. b. Hybrid entry IR69690H was more suitable to produce higher yield in response to lower doses of nitrogen. c. Hybrid and inbred produced similar yield and number of 1, 2, 3 seedlings per hill has no influence on yield. That means, single seedling per hill is economic and enough to produce optimum yield of rice. d. Hybrid entry IR69690H and Sonarbangla 1 was better to produce higher yield with single seedling. e. Thirty days old seedling produced significantly higher yield compared to 35, 40 and 45 days old seedlings of hybrid and BRRI dhan29. f. Sonnarbangla 1 gave higher yield but it was not significantly different. g. January planting with 30 days old seedling of hybrid was more productive in Boro season.While mid August planting was optimum for higher yield of inbred rice in T.Aman at Comilla region. h. SRI showed potential yield advantage.

Objectives:

1. To support research activities of flood affected research stations. 2. To strengthen the adaptive research capacities that focus on regional issues. 3. Provide support in conducting/evaluating advanced technologies and for income and employment generation.

Methodology:

The project was started in September, 1999 and continued up to March, 2001. The overall objective of the project was to determine an appropriate package of sustainable and economic technologies for higher yield of rice to minimize the post flood losses. Accordingly, a series of experiments had been conducted with hybrid and inbred rice in Boro 1999-2000: T. Aus 2000: T. Aman 2000 and Boro 2000-2001 to fulfill the project objectives. Titles of the experiments were as follows: 1. Effect of Nitrogen management on hybrid rice. 2.Effect of no. of seedling per hill on growth and yield of hybrid rice. 3. Influence of age of seedling on growth and yield of hybrid rice. 4.Effect of time of planting of hybrid rice in Comilla region. 5. Yield maximization through system of rice intensification (SRI). 6. Impact of different irrigation practices on hybrid rice. 7. Impact of supplemental irrigation on T. Aman cultivation. 8. Screening of blast resistant varieties for Comilla region. 9. Screening of hybrid and inbred rice against bacterial leaf blight and sheath blight. 10. Screening of inbred and hybrid varieties against rice tungro virus in T. Aman season. 11. Improvement of rice production through farmer training.

Achievement/Findings:

January planting of hybrid and inbred rice was more suitable in respect of higher yield. Similarly, mid August planting was optimum for T.Aman cultivars. Experimental results indicates that 1, 2 or 3 seedling per hill did not make any significant variations on grain yield. It was also found that 30 days old seedling produced significant higher yield than 35, 40 and 45 days old seedling. 80-200 kg n/ha produced significantly similar yield. SRI produced a remarkable higher yield (5.3 t/ha) of BR 26 in Aus than conventional method (4.3 t/ha). In SRI spacing of 30x30 cm was enough than recommended 50x50 cm. In Boro, continuous ponding, alternate wetting and drying did not differ significantly mainly due to even distribution of rainfall. Yield of hybrid and inbred was higher and matured 5-8 days earlier in broadcasting method than transplanting.
