Effect of Temperature on the Viability of Tossa Jute (corchorus Olitorius) Seeds in Storage

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted during March to December in 1998 at Gene Bank Department to study the effect of temperature on the viability of tossa jute seeds which conserved in BJRI Gene Bank. The seeds of 0-9897 with 5% moisture content and initial viability of 98% was divided into two lots. One lot was treated with Vitavax-200 (0.4%) and the other lot was untreated. The seeds were packed in aluminum foil pouches and sealed. The seed packets were stored in room temperature, +20C, +4C and –20C. The germination data were recorded at three months interval. Germination percentage of seeds under different storage temperature after 30 to 33 months of storage was presented in annual report. After 33 months of storage the seeds treated with vitavax maintained 69% germinatbility at room temperature, 75% at +20C, 73% at +4C and 77% at -20C. The untreated seeds maintained 78% germination at room temperature, 96% at + 20C, 96% at +4C and 98% at -20C. The study to be continued for conclusive results.

Objectives:

1. To find out present germination status of stored seed samples under different temperature

Methodology:

100 seeds of each accession were studied for germination. The seeds were allowed to germinate in 4 replicated forms with 25 seeds in each petridish. The viability test was recorded for three days from the date of germination test. Germination percent was recorded as per recommended ISTA rules.

Achievement/Findings:
