Characterization of Jute, Kenaf and Mesta Germplasm for Selecting Accessions Suitable for Growing Round the Year for Pulp and Paper in 1998

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station, Manikganj to characterize of 24 accessions of deshi jute, tossa jute, kenaf and mesta germplasm comprising 6 of C. capsularis, 6 of C. olitorius, 6 of H. cannabinus and 6 of H. sabdariffa were sown on February to October 1998 along with check varieties CVL-1, 0-9798, HC-2 and HS-24. The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Corchorus and Hibiscus descriptor. At mature fruit stage the plants were harvested and the records for plant height, base diameter, green weight, fibre weight and stick weight were taken. Based on the pooled data of nine months from February 1998 to October 1998 acc. 4467, 4471, 4620 for deshi jute; acc. 4148 for tossa jute; acc. 3747 and 2712 for kenaf and 2900 and 4667 for mesta showed better performance for growing round the year for pulp and paper than the rest of the accessions including their check varieties.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. The accessions were sown on February to October 1998 along with check varieties CVL-1, 0-9798, HC-2 and HS-24. Other standard cultural and intercultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at mature fruit stage and the records for plant height, base diameter, green weight, fiber weight and stick weight were taken.
