Characterization of Deshi Jute (corchorus Capsularis) Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Central Station, Dhaka to characterize of sixteen accessions of deshi jute collected from different sources were sown on 1 April, 1997 along with the check varieties CVL-1 and CC-45. The experiment was sown in a mini plot of 3 meter length of 5 rows for each accession. Row to row distance was 30 and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm in rows. The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. The accessions were characterized for their morph-agronomic attributes as per Corchorus descriptor. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected. Accessions showed wide ranges of variability for eleven major traits. Based on the major yield contributing characters viz. technical height, leaf angle, leaf length, leaf width, petiole length, node number, base diameter of stem, middle diameter of stem, top diameter of stem, core diameter, dry fibre weight and dry stick weight accessions CGR 1768, 5021, 5002 and 1770 performed better in most of the cases than the control varieties.

Objectives:

To characterize some of deshi jute germplasm as per Corchorus Descriptor for their morpho-agronomic attributes.

Methodology:

The unit plot size was 3m x 1.2 m for each accession and plot to plot distance was 1 meter. The accessions viz. CGR 1064, 4737, CGR 1473, 5016, 5002, 5004, 5015, CGR 1497, 5010, 4998, 5021, CGR 5013, CGR 1614, CGR 1768, CGR 1770 and 4706 were sown on 1 April, 1997 with check variety CVL-1 and CC-45. Other standard cultural and intercultural practices were followed. Pigmentation data were collected at 60 days after sowing. Plants were harvested at 120 days after sowing and post harvest data were collected.

Achievement/Findings:
