Monitoring on the Leaf Yellowing and Leaf Curling of Kenaf

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in the green house controlled condition during 2008 jute season following RCBD with three replications. To detect the mode of transmission of the disease and effect on both of fibre and seed yield due to these disease. 50% leaf yellowing and 70% leaf curling symptoms were transmitted by white flies in HC-2. Whereas, in HC-95 it was 40% leaf yellowing and 80% leaf curling symptoms. On the oter hand, , no disease symptoms were appeared in the control plot. Effect of diseases on plant height, green weight, fibre weight and also the seed weight were also recorded. Secondly, white flies (Bemasia tabaci) were collected from the kenaf field and 40-50 flies were released in each covered pot of leaf yellowing and leaf curling affected plants. The flies were allowed to feed for 48 hours and then transferred to the healthy pot covered by 0.05 mesh net. The disease acquiesced flies were permit to feed the plant to feed the plant for five days. Then the pots were cleaned and continuing the net covering up to the symptoms become visible. Observations and data were taken regularly. After the force feeding, 30% leaf yellowing and 60% leaf curling appeared in healthy plants of HC-2 and 40% of leaf yellowing and 50% leaf curling were become visible about in HC-95 variety of Kenaf. No disease symptoms were appeared in the control plot.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the fields of Central station Dhaka during 2008 jute season following RCBD with three replications.Two popular Kenaf & Mesta ( HC-95 & HC-2) varieties were grown in pots under controlled condition at green house. After that, plants of the pots were covered with 0.05 mesh net and set aside for the undistributed growth.White fly ( Bemisia tabaci ) were collected from another leaf curling and leaf yellowing diseased plants and 40-50 white flies were released in each covered pot. Simultaneously the covered control pots of those kenaf varieties were keeping free from field,s infestation and allowed them for undisturbed growth. The flies were permitted to feed on the plant for 7 days. After the death of all adult flies, the pots were cleaned and continuing the net covering up to the symptoms becomes visible. Observations and data were taken regularly.
