Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The interaction of crop establishment techniques and weeding practices did not influenced grain yield of boro rice. Wet-seeding by hand and drum seeder produced comparable grain yields but grain yield obtained from traditional transplanting (5.13 t/ha) was significantly lower than hand seeding (5.96 t/ha). The grain yield was not affected by weeding methods. Gross margins obtained from boro-fallow-T. Aman pattern were increased, on an average by 49% while boro was wet-seeded either by hand and drum seeder over traditional transplanting.

Objectives:

To compare the yield and yield attributes of Boro rice under different establishment techniques and weeding methods
To determine the most profitable crop establishment techniques and weeding method for Boro rice

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BRRI experimental farm during Boro 2005-06. The design of the experiment was split plot with three replications where different establishment methods were in the main plot and the methods of weeding were in sub plot. Three establishment methods were: direct seeding using drum seeder (S₁), direct seeding by hand (S₂) and Transplanting (S₃) and three weeding methods were Herbicide Rifit+ 1 hand weeding (W₁), weeding by BRRI weeder + I hand weeding (W₂) and 2 times hand weeding (W₃). Herbicide was applied @ 1L/ha.

Achievement/Findings:

Result shows that irrespective of different weeding methods, hand seeded rice gave an average yield of 6.45 t/ha which was comparable with that of drum seeded rice (6.17 t/ha).This was significantly higher than that of traditionally grown transplanted rice 5.76 t/ha. Number of filled grains per panicle and 1000-grain weight were statistically identical. The higher grain yield of direct hand seeded rice was associated with higher number of panicles/m². The results showed that irrespective of different seeding methods, yield, yield contributing characters and weed biomass were not affected by different weed control methods. Economic analysis shows that in Boro-Fallow-T. Aman cropping pattern, establishment of Boro rice either with drum seeder or by hand gave higher gross margin than transplanting method. The variation was mainly due to higher grain yield and less variable costs incurred in direct seeding method compared to transplanting method.
