Studies on the Physic-mechanical Properties of Jute and Allied Fibres Produced from New Germplasma Collection from East Africa.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were made on some varieties of white jute fibres produced from East Africa germ plasm. Various physico-mechanical properties of these fibres such as bundle strength, linear density, breaking tenacity, breaking elongation and textile modulus etc, were determined through standard test methods. And as per as standard tenacity value of Bangladesh white jute, only the varieties of accession numbers 511,514, 529, 533 and 540 are acceptable, the remaining being discard able. Bundle strength was more or less similar in trend to the tenacity value except in some cases. Breaking elongation of all samples are good expectable for accession numbers 512, 653 and 679. Thus, it can be concluded that only some of the varieties of the new gernplasm collected from East Africa are acceptable in respect of physical parameters.

Objectives:

To evaluate textile qualities of the new varieties of jute and allied fibres developed by BJRI (Agriculture) with a view to standardizing them and assessing suitability for spinning.

Methodology:

In this study ten fibre samples of accessions number 508, 511, 512, 514, 529, 533, 540, 647, 653 and 679 produced by BJRI (Agriculture) through new germplasm from East Africa have been used. The fibres were produced under the same Agronomic conditions. Various physico-mechanical properties of these fibres such as bundle strength, linear density, breaking tenacity, breaking elongation and textile modulus etc, were determined through standard test methods and regression analysis. Test work was done in the standard atmosphere of temp.20?C +? 2? C and RH 65%+? 2%.

Achievement/Findings:

From the data it was seen that since the tex values of all these accessions lie on the range from 1.47 to 2.60. These were acceptable figures compared to those of C.Capsularis available in Bangladesh. Textile modulus of all the varieties was good with the exception of accession numbers 500 and 647. Referring to the tenacity value it may be mentioned that in estimating the suitability of fibres for quality yarn manufacturing to be considered. It has been observed that a fiber which offer high tenacity was welcomed in the textile field. It yield yarns as well as fabrics of high strength. And as per as standard tenacity value of Bangladesh white jute, only the varieties of accession numbers 511,514, 529, 533 and 540 are acceptable, the remaining being discard able. But the high C.V. percentage in certain acceptable tenacity value of the varieties make the fibres unsuitable for quality yarns.
