Microscopic Studies on Jute and Allied Fibres

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Microscopic studies have been made on the cross-sections of fibre of white grades. Also the quality ratios of yarns spun from these grades were determined. The average number of cells per cross-section was around 8.4 for the grades of BWA, BWC and BWD and 9.6 for the grades of BWB and BWE but their respective quality ratios were not found to follow the same trend. The average number of cells per cross-sectional was near about 6.5 for the grades BWA, BWB, BWC and BWD but their quality ratios were of different values. In the case of large cross-sections, the mean number of cells was round about 12 for the grades of BWA and BWB where it was for the grades BWC and YWD and 13.36 for the grade BWE.

Objectives:

To study the morphological structure and cross section jute fibre with a view to finding out the distinguishing features between different qualities of fibre and related them to spinning quality.

Methodology:

In this investigation about sixty lbs of jute fibre are randomly procured from each grade, namely BWA, BWB, BWC, BWD, and BWE. A number of reeds of jute fibres were then randomly taken from each grade for microscopic study and the remaining part was then used for studying spinning quality of the fibres. In Microscopic studies a thick brass plate was used instead of microscopic glass slide. A number of holes of 1.5 mm dia. Were drilled in it. A bundle of fibres was then taken from each reed of jute and passed through the hole of the metal plate by passing a nylon yarn. The sectioning plate as a whole was placed under the microscope and the cross-sections of fibre were examined in the reflected light instead of transmitted light.

Achievement/Findings:

The shapes of cross-sections in percentage and number of cells per cross-section and the quality ratios of yarns were determined. The microscopic studies showed that the cross-sections of fibre of each grades of white jute were of different shapes viz. square/circular like, rectangular like, irregular and elongated. It was also observed that the percentage of the value of square/circular like cross-sectional shape of fibres of grades BWB, BWD, BWE & BWC are 47, 41, 40 and 38 respectively and their corresponding quality ratio values are found to be 108.00, 101.80, 92.25 and 89.45. The percentage of irregular shape of the above three grades are 21, 24, 26 respectively and are not follow the same order as that of quality ratios.
