Maximizing Agro-economic Productivity of Three-crop System by Practicing Double Transplanting for Boro Rice.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The result showed the agronomic productivity of the crops and cropping patterns. At BRRI, Gazipur, T. Aman yield ranged from 4.61to 4.93 t/ha. Potato yielded 12.11 and 16.72 t/ha when harvested at 70 and 86 days after planting, respectively. At Kapasia, T. Aman yield ranged from 4.70 to 4.89 t/ha. Potato yielded 17.60 t/ha when harvested after 70 days of plating and 27.08 t/ha when harvested at full maturity. In Gazipur site, highest REY of 27.64 t/ha was obtained from pattern T.Aman-Potato-Boro (Double transplanted) followed by T.Aman-Potato-Boro and T.Aman-Fallow-Boro pattern, which gave average REY of 22.16 and 14.18 t/ha, respectively. Similar results were also observed at Kapasia site with the highest rice equivalent yield (REY) of 36.10 t/ha. Economic analysis shows that pattern T.Aman-Potato-Double transplanted Boro rice gave 102% and 206% higher gross margin than the traditional pattern T. Aman-Fallow-Boro at BRRI, Gazipur and Kapasia and 40% and 46% higher gross margin than the pattern T. Aman-Potato-Single transplanted Boro rice, respectively.

Objectives:

To bring diversification and increase cropping intensity with the inclusion of potato in the wet-dry transition period of traditional Boro-T. Aman cropping pattern
To maximize productivity of the proposed three-crop system by practicing double transplanted Boro rice

Methodology:

Treatment: Cropping pattern/ component technology T₁: T. Aman - Boro - Fallow (Existing) T₂: T. Aman - Potato - Boro T₃: T. Aman - Potato - Boro (Double transplanted) Crop Variety T. Aman BR6110/ BRRIdhan39 Boro BRRI dhan29 Potato Diamont or any short duration variety T. Aman Potato Boro D/S: Last week of June By 15 November By 15 November (On the same day of potato planting) D/T: 30-35 days old seedlings - * Last week of December with 40-45 days old seedlings (Existing practice: T₁) * After potato harvesting with 60 days old seedlings (Potato harvesting after 60 days of planting: T₂) * Double transplanting Steps to be followed for double transplanting: Step 1: First transplanting of 40-45 days old seedlings in a small area with 12-15 seedlings per hill maintaining 10 x 10 cm spacing: 1200 m² area needs to be transplanted for covering 10000 m² under 2nd transplanting Step 2: Second (Double) transplanting in the main field with 5-6 splitting tillers per hill (60% of the tillers of the first planted crop) maintaining 20 x 15 cm spacing after potato harvesting at 90 days of potato planting Fertilizer: 1. Recommended doses of fertilizers for T. Aman, potato and Boro (Traditional practice) 2. For 1st transplanting (Boro): P, K, S and Zn at the recommended rate as basal. N @ 90 kg/ha as basal and 30 kg N/ha 10-days before splitting of tillers for 2nd double transplanting 3. Second (Double) transplanting: P, K, S and Zn at the recommended rate as basal.
