Boro Rice Cultivation Under Power Tiller Technology at Bogra District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study analyzed the profitability of power tiller use on MV Boro rice cultivation under different categories of farms at Bogra district. Eighty-six power tiller (PT) users from different categories of farms and 66 power tiller non-users were interviewed using a set of pre-designed questionnaire following a stratified random sampling technique. The yield of Boro rice production under power tiller use increased with the increase of farm size. The benefit cost ratio over full cost was more or less same for all categories of farms, but on cash cost basis it was higher for small category of farms than others. Human labor earned the highest share (23%) of outputs among others in factor share analysis and farmers earned the higher share (71%) of the total income among the production participants under PT cultivation, while under bullock (PT non-users) cultivation human labor earned 26% share of outputs and farmers earned 74% of the total income. Small groups of power tiller owners cultivated more lands of other farmers compared to other two categories and hence they earned higher net income (Tk. 14800) per season. Before power tiller use, 36 man-days were required for land preparation but after power tiller use it was only 7 man-days. Low quality of engine and spare parts were the main problems for using power tiller.

Objectives:

1. To determine the profitability level of Boro rice cultivation between PT users and non- users;

2. To determine the comparative factor share and income shares of different production participants;

3. To find out the income effect and employment opportunity of power tiller uses; and

4. To identify the problems of using power tiller at the farm level.

Methodology:

A representative area was selected for the study to explore the economics of rice cultivation under power tiller uses. The study was conducted at ten villages of Nandigram thana under Bogra district. All the power tiller owners (287) were listed first and then categorized according to farm size. Stratified proportionate random sampling technique was adopted to select the sample farmers. This resulted in 10 small, 26 medium, and 50 large farmers. On the other hand, 66 sample farmers who did not use PT (16 small, 24 medium, and 26 large) were purposively selected within those villages. Pre-tested questionnaire was used for collection of data. The data were collected in the Boro season of 1997. The collected data were then tabulated, summarized and finally analyzed as per objectives of the study. Descriptive statistics were used to present the findings of the study. Factor share was defined as the ratio of cost of an input used in the production process to the total value of output. Following this procedure factor shares were computed for current inputs, animal labor, human labor, power tiller, and land for each farm size groups. Current inputs included cost of seeds, manure, fertilizer, insecticides, irrigation and interest of the cash cost. Interest was calculated at the rate of 10% for the 4 months. Income share was defined as the ratio of income received by the participant of production to the total value added.

Achievement/Findings:

Low quality of engine and low quality of spare parts were the main problems for using power tiller. Thus the quality of spare parts and quality engine could increase the efficiency of power tiller for land preparation which ultimately would increase the net income of the farmers irrespective of farm size and this will also increase extra employment opportunities. Therefore, the policy makers can make national plan to ensure the quality of power tiller. The results indicated that the PT users produced higher yield, got higher returns as well as more profit than the PT non-users. Hired laborers are more benefited in case of PT users. So input cost should be reduced via providing subsidy to increase the farmers' share of output. Policy should be undertaken to provide sufficient subsidy to the farmers to use power tillers in agriculture to maximize the Boro rice production minimizing the input cost.
