This study was carried out to analyze the performance of a weed management practice in wet seeded rice (WSR) cultivation practice by line sowing method in silt-clay soil in Boro 2001-2002 season at BRRI Farm, Gazipur. Water. chemical and direct weeding control were taken as variable in this study. Application of water after 3 days of disappearing of standing water provided better weed control (224.21 g/m2 weed biomass) and as well as gave better grain yield (5.25 t/ha), whereas. application of water at 5 days of disappearing of standing water provided 260 g/m2 of weed biomass and 4.83 t/ha of grain yield. Weed management with the combination of herbicide. mechanical and manual provided less weed biomass production as well as less labour requirement but it gave comparatively less grain yield, whereas, combination of mechanical and manual weeding methods provided comparatively higher weed biomass production as well as higher labour requirement but it gave significantly higher grain yield. The combination 01'2 mechanical weeding (25 DAS & 50 DAS) + 1 hand weeding (75 DAS) gave 264.48 g/m2 of weed biomass production and 5.46 t/ha of grain yield. The interaction effect of water after 3 days of disappearing of standing water and [2 mechanical weeding (25 DAS & 50 DAS) + 1 hand weeding (75 DAS)] weed management gave higher grain yield (5.88 t/ha) and also gave 270 g/m:' of weed biomass production. This results proof that more weed biomass production requires more man- hour for weeding. Total weeding cost did not differ significantly between irrigation practices. The total weeding cost without chemical combination is lower than with chemical combination. Without chemical herbicide practice gave higher return than with chemical herbicide practice (SD= 1719 Tk/ha). The interaction effect of irrigation and weeding methods also revealed that total labour cost was higher with herbicide practice (SD=1254 Tk/ha.) and return is higher without chemical herbicide (SD=2290 Tk/ha.). In this study, the combination of mechanical and hand weeding method showed better performance over herbicide combination with mechanical and manual weeding.

To analyze the performance of different weed management practices in WSR cultivation practice by line sowing method.

The study was carried out in silty clay soil in Boro 2001-2002 season at BRRI Farm Gazipur to control weed by the combination of chemical, mechanical weeder and hand weeding practices. In the management there were two water treatments and four chemical and mechanical management treatments. The experiment was two factor randomized block design. Treatments: I1 = Irrigation after 3 days of disappearing of standing water I2 = Irrigation after 5 days of disappearing of standing water W1= Herbicide(6 DAS) + 2 mechanical (25 & 50 DAS) + 1 hand weeding (75 DAS) W2= 2 mechanical weeding (25 & 50 DAS) + I hand weeding (75 DAS) W3= Herbicide at 6 DAS + 2 mechanical weeding (25 & 50 DAS) W4 = 2 mechanical weeding (25 & 50 DAS) Sowing method: Line sowing with 20 cm, Plot size: 4 m x 2.5 m, Variety: BRRI Dhan 28 Seed Rate: 70 kg/ha, Fertilizer rate : 220-120-85-60-10 kg/ha Urea, TSP, MP, Gypsum, ZnS04. All fertilizer except urea was applied during land preparation. Urea was top dressed in 4 equal splits at an interval of 20-25-30-15 days consecutively. Pesticide: Cidial 5G was applied for insect control one time and equal dose in every plot. Data Collection: Weed population; weed dry matter, labour requirement, yield data were collected during the experimental period.

Longer duration of no standing water provides more intensive weed in rice field. Application of chemical herbicide reduces the number of labour for weeding, whereas, mechanical and manual weeding requires comparatively more labour for weeding. More weed biomass production requires more labour.The total cost of mechanical and manual weeding is less than with chemical herbicide and hand weeding practices as well as BCR was higher in without herbicide along with irrigation 3 days after disappearing standing water along with 2 mechanical and I hand weeding in wet seeded line sowing boro rice. In line sowing WSR method under irrigated condition the total cost of mechanical and manual weeding is recommended. Ergonomic study of weeding and environmental effect of different weed management practice should be studied. This study also should be continued at different locations of the country at variable condition.
